圣诞节的由来：

“圣诞节”是“基督弥撒”的缩写，弥撒是教会的一种礼拜仪式。圣诞节是一个宗教节日，因为这天恰是耶稣的诞辰，故而“圣诞节”又叫“耶诞节”。

关于耶稣的诞生，还有一段神奇的传说。据马太福音记载，耶稣是由童女玛利亚所生。据说，玛利亚被天使称为有福的女子，一日天使告诉玛利亚，圣灵要她以童女之身怀孕耶稣。她感到惊奇，问道：“我没有出嫁，怎么会怀孕呢?”

天使对她说：“圣灵要临到你身上，至高无上的圣灵荫庇你，你就会未婚而孕，你所生的圣者乃是上帝的儿子。”

接着，天使又以玛利亚的亲戚伊利莎白年老而怀孕为例，说明上帝要做的事，没有不可能的。果然就在这天夜里，圣灵与玛利亚梦中幽会，二人缠绵悱恻，行云雨之欢。次日，玛利亚去拜访伊利莎白询问未婚而孕之事。伊丽莎白告诉她圣灵所做之事，千真万确。不久玛利亚就感到自己腹中有胎儿跳动。这时玛利亚已与大卫家族的约瑟订婚，恰在这时，天使在梦中告诉约瑟：“不要因玛利亚未婚而孕就嫌弃她，你要马上与她成亲，她所怀的孩子是上帝的儿子，你给这个孩子起名‘耶稣’，他的使命就是把百姓从罪恶中拯救出来。”约瑟牢记天使的话，很快与玛利亚结婚。

当玛利亚快要临盆时，恰逢罗马政府下命令：全体臣民必须申报户籍。约瑟和玛利亚只好遵命，回到约瑟的家乡伯利恒申报户籍。当他们到达伯利恒时，天色已晚，二人没有找到旅馆，只好在一个马棚里歇息。就在这天夜里，玛利亚在马棚里生下了耶稣，并将他放在马槽内。后来，人们为了纪念耶稣的诞生，便定12月25日为圣诞节，年年这天做弥撒，以纪念耶稣的诞辰。

每年的12月25日，全世界所有的基督教徒都会举行特别的礼拜仪式，用以纪念耶稣的诞生。不过，后来的很多圣诞节活动和宗教几乎没有半点联系，而是一种单纯的娱乐活动。诸如交换礼物，寄圣诞卡，所有这些，都使圣诞节成为一个普天同庆的日子。

其实，教会开始并无圣诞节，是耶稣诞生后逐渐形成的。据说第一个圣诞节是在138年，由罗马主教圣克里门倡议举行的，而教会史中却又记载第一个圣诞节是336年举行的，直到440年，才由罗马教廷确定12月25日为圣诞节。

1607年，世界各地教会领袖在伯利恒聚会，进一步确定圣诞节的日期为12月25日。从此世界上大多数基督徒都以12月25日为圣诞节。由于耶稣生于午夜，故又称12月24日之夜为“圣诞夜”或“平安夜”。

圣诞节的习俗，西方各国有异，择其要者介绍如下：

在法国，每年圣诞节前后，法国中部的色日尔斯必降大雪，白雪皑皑，空气清新。在西方人眼里，白色是圣洁的象征，白色是一种吉祥，故而人们爱过过“白色圣诞”。

相传耶稣是在马槽旁边诞生的，故而马槽成为最富特色的圣诞标志。人们在马槽周围，兴高采烈地唱唱“圣诞歌”，之后开怀畅饮，而香槟和白兰地则是法国人传统的圣诞美酒。

在芬兰，圣诞节前后，恰逢紫罗兰盛开，漫山遍野的紫罗兰，掩映在白色的大地上，放眼望去，一片紫红色，令人心旷神怡，所以芬兰人爱过“紫色圣诞”。

英国人和德国人，喜欢在圣诞节喝啤酒，吃烤鹅，还有许多人利用圣诞节外出旅游。

美国人，圣诞节时着重家庭布置，比如装饰圣诞树，在袜子中塞满礼物，吃以火鸡为主的圣诞大菜，举行家庭舞会等等。

瑞士人，早在圣诞节前4个星期，就将4支巨型蜡烛点燃，放在由树枝装饰成的一个大环里，每周点燃1支蜡烛，当点燃第4支蜡烛后，圣诞节就到了。

澳大利亚地理位置特殊，它处于南半球，正当西欧各国在寒风呼啸中欢度圣诞节时，这儿却是热不可耐的炎热夏季。因此，在澳大利亚，圣诞节时到处是汗水淋漓的小伙子和穿着超短裙的姑娘，恰与商店橱窗里精心布置的冬日雪景、挂满雪花的圣诞树和穿着红棉袄的圣诞老人，这种酷暑和严冬景象的强烈对比，在西方国家是独一无二的。

在圣诞节这天，父母给子女最好的圣诞礼物，莫过于一副小水划。圣诞节弄潮是澳大利亚人的一大特征。节日晚上，他们带着饮料到森林里举行“巴别居”野餐。人们在石头垒成的露天灶中用枯树枝生火，上面架上铁板，把香肠、牛肉、鲜鱼等放上去煎。酒足饭饱之后，就兴高采烈地跳起“迪斯科”或“袋鼠舞”，一直欢闹到深夜。喝醉了的人们，便往草地上一躺，在如雷的鼾声中迎接圣诞老人的莅临。

在波兰，每年12月25日、26日，家家户户都要装饰圣诞树。节日里亲朋好友之间相互祝贺，互赠礼品。晚餐时桌布下边还要放一些草，以示耶稣的诞生。晚餐虽很丰盛，但没有鱼肉。午夜12时之后，全家人就去教堂礼拜。之外，波兰人在圣诞节期间，除主人盛情邀请外，一般不到朋友家做客。

圣诞袜的传说：

在很久以前，有一位心地善良的贵族，他的妻子病逝后抛下他和三个女儿。这个贵族爱搞发明创造，结果都失败了，因此耗尽了家产，他们不得不搬到一家农舍居住，三个女儿也只得自食其力，亲自下厨烧煮，缝纫衣服，打扫房间庭院，父女四人相依为命，艰难度日。

一晃几年过去了，三个女儿相继到了出嫁的年龄，他无能为力给女儿们置办一套像样的嫁妆，因而寝食不安，郁郁不欢。

一天晚上，女儿们洗完衣服之后，随即将长统袜挂在壁炉前烘干。圣诞老人得知她们父亲的窘境后，就在这天晚上，他来到她们家里，从窗口看到一家人都已熟睡，并注意到女孩们的长统袜。随即，他从口袋里掏出三小包黄金，从烟囱上一个个投下去，刚好掉在女孩们的长统袜里。

第二天早上，女儿们醒来发现她们的长统袜里装满了金子，这些金子足够供她们买嫁妆了。这个贵族用这些金子为女儿置办嫁妆，他亲眼看到女儿们结婚，从此过上了幸福快乐的生活。后来，世界各地的孩子们都继承了悬挂圣诞袜的传统，法国的孩子们则将鞋子放在壁炉旁。

改革开放以来，西方节日习俗不断传入我国，国人尤其是青年人，也开始过起洋节了，其中圣诞节最为隆重，超市里圣诞礼物热销，商品减价促销，好不热闹!

Santa Claus was born in US in the 1860s he was named this as he had a white beard and a belly, so he was named Santa Claus as this was the Dutch word for St Nicholas, Sintaklaas. Although the Dutch had bought him with them in the 17th century, he did not become an important person at Christmas until the Novelist Washington Irving put him in a novel that he wrote in 1809. This first Santa Claus was still known as St. Nicholas, he did smoke a pipe, and fly around in a wagon without any reindeer, but he did not have his red suit or live at the North Pole, he did however bring presents to children every year.

In 1863 He was given the name Santa Claus and bore the red suit, pipe, and his reindeer and sleigh.

Christmas Day,the 25th of December,is the biggest festival celebrated in the Christian countries of the world.Although everyone enjoys Christmas Day,it is particularly enjoyed by children,who get very excited because of the presents they know they are going to receive.Small children believe that their presents are brought by Santa Claus. Santa Claus (also called" Father Christmas)is a kind of old man who,the children are told,lives at the North Pole.He travels through the sky on a sleigh which is pulled by reindeers and loaded with presents.Stopping on the roof of houses,he enters by climbing the chimney.When small children go to bed on Christmas Eve,they hang a stocking at the end of their beds.Their parents warn them not to try to look at Father Christmas,or he will not leave them anything.When they wake,they find their stockings filled with presents.Children are very excited on Christmas morning and always wake up early.

Christmas is also a family celebration.As any members of the family as possible.

Christmas Day is on December 25th, though it originated in the western

country, now it is popular around the world. In China, people will spend that

day happily, they will eat apples on Christmas Eve, the children will put the

socks so that they could get the presents from Santa Claus. When I went to

college, I had an unforgettable memory about my first Christmas Day.

As my major is English, I have many foreign teachers, so that I could have

access to the local culture from them. Christmas Day is a big day for them, when

the day came, they asked us to spend the day with them, because most of them

left home and did not have families around. My classmates and I went to the

foreign teacher’s home at that day, we brought some presents, when we arrived at

his house, we found a beautiful tree with shinning lights. My teachers taught us

how to cook all the cookies, we were having such great fun. I made the cookies

with many favors. We talked happily and sung Christmas songs.

I learned how the foreign people spend their big day, it was such

unforgettable for me.

christmas is coming

i like christmas, it is just like our spring festival.

maybe the spring festival is much more important and interesting than christmas, but i like christmas day better. because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during christmas. when it is snowy,

christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. i can imagine i am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. what a beautiful place! so we can also call christmas “snowy lovely day.”

on christmas day, shops are red and green. there are so many christmas cards, christmas hats, christmas dolls and many colourful things. so shops look very beautiful. we can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “merry christmas.” by the way, i think studying can also become much more interesting.

christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. let’s study harder to welcome the new year!
