俞伯牙是战国时期一名著名的乐师，但却没有一个人听得懂他的琴声。一天，俞伯牙在溪边弹琴，钟子期顺便路过，听懂了俞伯牙的琴声，俞伯牙终于遇到了知音，两人约定一年后在此一聚。第二年，俞伯牙却没等到钟子期。这时，有为老者来告诉俞伯牙，钟子期已经去世了。俞伯牙来到钟子期的坟前，含泪弹完一首曲后，遍把琴摔碎在坟前。他悲伤地说：我唯一的知音已不在人世了，这琴还弹给谁听呢?”两位“知音”的友谊感动了后人，人们在他们相遇的地方，筑起了一座古琴台。直至今天，人们还常用“知音”来形容朋友之间的情谊。
