The word Christmas comes from Cristes maesse, an early English phrase that means Mass of Christ. The story of Christmas comes chiefly from the Gospels of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew in the New Testament.

The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals(parades) with floats, carolers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

Many of these traditions began with the Mesopotamian celebration of New Years. The Mesopotamians believed in many gods, and as their chief god-Marduk. Each year as winter arrived it was believed that Marduk would do battle with the monsters of chaos. To assist Marduk in his struggle the Mesopotamians held a festival for the New Year. This was Zagmuk, the New Years festival that lasted for 12 days.

The Persians and the Babylonians celebrated a similar festival called the Sacaea. Part of that celebration included the exchanging of places, the slaves would become the masters and the masters were to obey. The ancient Greeks held a festival similar to that of the Zagmuk/Sacaea festivals to assist their god Kronos who would battle the god Zeus and his Titans.

The Romans celebrated their god Saturn. Their festival was called Saturnalia which began the middle of December and ended January 1st. With cries of Jo Saturnalia! the celebration would include masquerades in the streets, big festive meals, visiting friends, and the exchange of good-luck gifts called Strenae (lucky fruits). Some legends claim that the Christian Christmas celebration was invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December. The 25th was not only sacred to the Romans but also the Persians whose religion Mithraism was one of Christianitys main rivals at that time. The Church eventually was successful in taking the merriment, lights, and gifts from the Saturanilia festival and bringing them to the celebration of Christmas.

The exact day of the Christ childs birth has never been pinpointed. Traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD. In 137 AD the Bishop of Rome ordered the birthday of the Christ Child celebrated as a solemn feast. In 350 AD another Bishop of Rome, Julius I, choose December 25th as the observance of Christmas.

熟悉的音乐再次响起，两人都有随时坐下的准备，接下来是心理的考验，对峙着，成功则是一举成功，失败就会功亏一篑。“哈”“嘿”“嘭”最终城城以着超强的心理打败了对手。

接下来的活动也很精彩。到了换礼物的时间了。我希望能换到一个好礼物!真是让人期待啊!

恩!后来我也抽到了一个让人羡慕的礼物。

新学期，我从城里的外国语学校又回到了家乡的那所学校。回想一年来在新学校的发生的件件事情，有一件让我非常难忘，就是去年圣诞节那天晚上，爸爸带给我们的惊喜。

去年，我随妈妈一起从乡下的小学来到了城里的外国语学校，每隔10天回家一次，这让从小就和爸爸妈妈在一起的我很不习惯。尽管爸爸平时对我很严厉，我不喜欢和他在一起。可忽然爸爸不在身边了，我又觉得生活好象少了一部分，在学校的时间里，我又开始想念着他。圣诞节那天晚上，学校张灯结彩，灯笼高挂，一派圣诞气息。晚自习后，看着别的小朋友有说有笑的挽着爸爸妈妈的手出去玩，而我只能跟着妈妈在办公室里，我心里真的别有一番滋味，要是今晚爸爸在这多好啊！

忽然，妈妈的电话响了，是爸爸！他告诉妈妈他骑摩托车已到学校大门口了，妈妈问他来时为什么没有告诉她一声，爸爸说要给我们惊喜，是的，那天晚上，爸爸的到来给了我们很大的惊喜。坐在爸爸的摩托车上，我心里别提有多高兴了，我们首先来到饭店，进了饭店，就见里面的服务员都带着圣诞老人的帽子，墙上也贴满了圣诞老人的图画，电视里还播放着圣诞节目，让我感觉就像进了圣诞老人的家。爸爸为我们点了丰盛的饭菜，我们在一起吃饭、聊天，还讨论着圣诞节的话题。

吃完了饭，爸爸带我们去了超市，为我们买了很多东西，有吃的、日常用的，我和妈妈的手都有些提不住了，到了宿舍，爸爸没有走，和我们又聊了很多……从爸爸质朴的话语中，我感觉到了发自他内心的浓浓爱意。那晚，我永远忘不了！

在这个暑假中，旅行使我增长见识，学习使我深受启发。
