元有始之意，旦指天明的时间，也通指白天。元旦，便是一年开始的第一天。

元旦在古时候称为元日，据说“元旦”最初的称呼起自三皇五帝之一的颛顼，颛顼以正月为元，初一为旦，而后来的夏、商、周、秦、汉各个朝代对元旦的规定各不相同。夏代以正月初一为元旦，商代以十二月初一为元旦，周代以十一月初一为元旦。

元旦一词，最早出自南朝人萧子云 《介雅》诗：四气新元旦，万寿初今朝。宋代吴自牧 《梦梁录》卷一正月条目：正月朔日，谓之元旦，俗呼为新年。一岁节序，此为之首。汉代崔瑗《三子钗铭》中叫元正。晋代庾阐《扬都赋》中称作元辰。北齐时的一篇《元会大享歌皇夏辞》中呼为元春。唐德宗李适《元日退朝观军仗归营》诗中谓之元朔。历来元旦指的是夏历(农历、阴历)正月初一。在汉语各地方言中有不同叫法，有叫大年初一的，有叫大天初一的，有叫年初一的，一般又叫正月初一。我国历代元旦的月日并不一致。夏代在正月初一，商代在十二月初一，周代在十一月初一。

Today, more and more young people are crazy about western festivals. When western festivals come, they usually go to restaurants or shopping malls to have fun.

如今，越来越多的年轻人都对西方的节日着迷。当西方节日到来的时候，他们常常去餐厅或是商场娱乐。

Why do the young enjoy western festivals so much? Since they worship everything new, and they can’t resist the temptation. In their opinions, western festivals symbolize the fashion, while our Chinese traditional festivals are out of date. No wonder we always feel so boring during our traditional holidays. If we still turn a blind eye to our traditional festivals, our culture and civilization will disappear someday. Accordingly, it is high time for us to pay close attention to our Chinese festivals.

为什么年轻人这么喜爱西方节日呢?大抵是因为他们喜爱新鲜事物，抗拒不了诱惑。在他们看来，西方节日代表着时尚，而中国传统节日则太土了。这也难怪我们也觉得我们的传统节日太过无聊了。如果我们对传统节日漠然置之，那么某天我们的文化文明终会消失。因此，我们该多多关注我们中国自己的节日了。

As a Chinese, we have the obligation to protect our culture and custom. So I think we should celebrate our Chinese festivals by doing some traditional activities. As for western festivals, we needn’t to be too excited about them. We can just send our best wishes to our best friends during those festivals.

作为一名中国人，我们有责任保护自己的文化习俗。所以我认为应当在庆祝中国传统节日时候举办一些传统活动。而对于西方节日，我们不需要太过激动。在这些节日里我们应该只需简单的送上祝福就好。

In the U.S. Mothers Day is a holiday celebrated on second Sunday in May. It is a day when children honor their mothers with cards, gifts, and flowers. First observance in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907, it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and by Anna Jarvis in 1907.

Although it wasnt celebrated in the U.S. until 1907, there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods that was given honor.

Later, in the 1600s, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday." It was celebrated during June, on the fourth Sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.

In the U.S., in 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mothers Day. Jarvis persuaded her mothers church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mothers Day on the second anniversary of her mothers death, the 2nd Sunday of May. The next year Mothers Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mothers Day. They were successful. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mothers Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mothers Day at different times throughout the year. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May, as in the U.S.

Among the 5 nice cities, the BIE chose Shanghai at last! It’s really an exciting news for not only Shanghainese, but also all of Chinese people. Here are some details about it.

Shanghai Expo is the first comprehensive World Expo held in a developing country. 今天是母亲节，老师让我们为母亲做一件事情，我就想到了打扫房间。

午饭过后，我想起了这件事。于是，我拿起扫把，这时妈妈看见了说：“嘿，懒惰的小宝贝今天怎么拿起扫把来了?”妈妈会心地笑了。

妈妈上班去了，我就开始打扫房间。我先扫地，我扫的非常认真，扫的满头大汗，我想：妈妈每天都这样扫地，肯定特别累。等妈妈回来我一定要给她捶捶背。扫完地之后，我又开始擦玻璃，我先把抹布用水洗一边然后就开始擦玻璃。我擦着擦着，一下子，我摔倒在床上，幸好我们家的床是软的。

过了一个小时，我终于做完了所有的家务，我累得汗流浃背。这时，妈妈回来了，她看着我惊奇地说：“家里怎么变得这么干净呀?你怎么变成这个样子?”我说：“你才今天是什么节日?”妈妈看了一下日历表说：哦，原来今天是母亲节。“我大叫一声：”妈妈，节日快乐，我爱你!”
