刘备一行乘船顺江而下，很快就到了东吴水面。风浪很大，船晃得厉害。赵子龙想等风平浪静后再看军师的妙计，刘备却说，现已进入东吴地界，危险重重，万一东吴水军袭击，想看妙计都来不及了。

赵子龙觉得刘备说得有理，就将锦囊拆开。不料一股旋风袭来，顿时巨浪滔天。赵子龙站在船头，纵然武艺高强，也因船只颠簸摔了个嘴啃船板，幸好双手抓住船帮，才没掉到水里。可诸葛亮给他的妙计，连同锦囊一起掉到风浪里，打个转就不见了。

风浪平息后，赵子龙一行人划着木船，在江面上转了好几圈，又派几个水性好的士兵到水里寻找，都不见妙计的踪影，倒是那个漂亮的绸缎袋子还挂在船底的一颗钉头上，装了一袋子的脏水。

丢失了军师的妙计，刘备不敢去娶孙权的妹妹了，他决定先回荆州。可他们正要掉转船头，就听到有人喊：“刘玄德，你走不了啦!”

一艘大船飞快地驶来，船上站着一位威风凛凛的将军，仔细一看，正是周瑜。周瑜要活捉刘备，逼他归还荆州。赵子龙带领将士拼死抵挡，才得以脱身，但刘备的左腿中了一箭，赵子龙也被周瑜的长枪刺伤了右臂。

回到荆州后，刘备一瘸一拐地走下船来。诸葛亮吃惊地问：“主公，你没有采用我的锦囊妙计?”

刘备生气地说：“妙计被风浪卷走了，锦囊还在。”他把脏兮兮的袋子扔到诸葛亮的脚下。

赵子龙捂着手臂上的伤口问：“军师，你那妙计到底是什么?”

诸葛亮捡起锦囊说：“我想让你们到了东吴后，就沿路宣传孙权是请主公来娶他妹妹的。这事闹得越大，孙权就越下不了台，你们也就越安全，主公也越有可能娶到孙权的妹妹。”

赵子龙埋怨说：“不就是几句话吗?军师为什么不预先告诉我和主公，非要神神秘秘地装到袋子里，还必须到东吴才能拆看?你害得主公差点儿丢掉性命啊!”

诸葛亮追悔莫及：“我没想到江上风浪那么大。”

此后，诸葛亮有什么妙计都当面讲清楚，再也不敢装到锦囊里故弄玄虚了。
