The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is called the "Ten thousand Ii Great Wall" in Chinese. In fact, it s more than 6 000 kilometres long. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the dif ferent parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Emperor Qin Shi Huang had all the walls joined up. Thus, the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."

Yesterday afternoon, when I was sitting in the classroom and listening to

the teacher. Suddenly, the screen seemed moving and it started to shake. My

teacher stopped his class and then he asked us to calm down. He let the students

who were close to the door left first, and then the rest of us ran out of the

It is reported that ten big cities in China are being ranked among the top twenty cities with the highest pollution index in the world. This means it is high time we did something to bring the situation under control.Many factors are contributing to the deteriorating situation: industrial wastes pumped into the air， the lakes and rivers; a increasing number of automobiles crowding into the streets; the widespread use of plastic bags etc.

To my view， stiffer laws and regulations must be implemented to check pollution. Industries that release wastes without permission should be heavily fined. Cars should be equipped to minimize the exhaust they release into the air. And the use of plastic bags and disposable meal boxes should be banned. What’s more， the media should play an important role in implanting a sense of environmental consciousness into people’s mind. 1948年底，时任国民党徐州“剿总”副总司令的杜聿明以赴刑场的心情上战场，兵败被俘，两次以砖头猛击头部，自杀未遂。蒋介石得此消息，也不免心恸垂泪。但不料想，杜将军进了共产党的监狱，几年之间，便彻底“赤化”，于1957年被第一批特赦释放。蒋介石颜面尽失，雷霆震怒，不准许杜的夫人曹秀清和子女出入台湾。曹秀清带着婆母和5个儿女在台北生活十分窘迫。为了兑现当年蒋介石手谕的许诺，曹秀清曾找过宋美龄、张群等人反映自己的处境，然而均未结果。

1957年，曹秀清突然接到女儿杜致礼和女婿杨振宁的信。说：“您的‘老朋友’与我通信了，他非常关心您，惦念着你们母子的安全。”曹秀清幡然领悟到“老朋友”就是令她朝思暮想、魂牵梦绕的丈夫杜聿明。

曹秀清清楚，她只有取道美国才可能见到她的“老朋友”。于是她向台湾当局提出了要求去美国看望女儿的请求。但蒋介石却“关照”：“杜聿明的妻子儿女不得再离开台湾!”

The Chinese people, in their drinking of tea, place much significance on
