我們以前會說“人定勝天”，認為只要努力沒有辦不到的事情，可是事實證明，這是人類的一廂情願。事實上，人類只能順應自然，而不可能去戰勝它、逆轉它。

比如說，我們可以將果樹嫁接，但是我們不能讓一頭牛的角上長出蘋果來;我們可以人工降雨，可是我們不能控制異常海嘯的發生;我們可以提高糧食的產量，但不可能讓一畝地長出萬斤糧食。

也就是說，我們盡可以利用大自然的饋賜，可以用人類的聰明才智去創造一些東西，但是不可能完全違背大自然的規律，不能逆“道”而施，否則就會自取滅亡。

什麽是自然?老子所講的自然就是“自然而然”，也就是沒有“外力”影像的這個世界的本來面目，即“本來的樣子”。現在來理解，它既應包含所有“自然”的存在，也應包括“自然運行的規律。”可是，自然既然是至大無外的話， 有什麽能成為“外力”而使之“不自然”呢?

我們常說的自不自然的概念其實是針對人類自身來說的，是從人類角度出發的。人，自有文明以來，也就一直處於這樣的矛盾之中：既認為自己是自然的一部份，又失常講自己置身于自然之外，以至於將自己看成一個能夠影響”自然“的外力。這豈不是本末倒置了嗎?

有的人認為，人類無需敬畏自然，更不必順天。

但是，在人類製造了工作，有了一些發明，有了科學發展滯後，開始提出人定勝天這類口號，在處理人與自然的關係時，總是以人為本。結果如何呢?

因為以人為本，樹木被亂砍濫伐，野生動物被屠殺，地球的生態環境越來越惡劣。人類似乎已經完全忘記了自己本來就是自然的一部份，有什麽道理不去順應自然而非要以我們人類為本呢?民盟中央主席張梅穎咋看了德國小學生的環保紀實后好呢感慨地說：那種不認為自然為母，反以為自然為器，乃至要征服自然的反自然觀念，助長了環境災害中日益嚴重的人類。

的確，許多天災實為人禍，是因為人類的活動為自然環境的資源帶來無可逆轉的傷害。

如果我們認定大自然中的一切都是在為人類服務，而用各種手段去改造它、控制它，那麼距離人類的滅亡也就不遠了。

如果在一個有許多子女的家庭里只重視一個孩子，處處為他考慮，而將其他的孩子都利用起來為這個孩子謀求發展，甚至不惜破壞其他孩子的一切，那麼是不是大家都會覺得不合理?其實自然就像一個大家庭，這個家庭中不只有人類一個孩子，還有其他的物種。

當面對自然的時候，我們考慮的不能僅僅是人類自身，否額就會被其他的“兄弟姐妹”所拋棄。

我們提倡敬畏自然，是要順“道”而行，因為“道”是萬物之所由。我們說敬畏，重點在敬，而不是畏，是要以深厚的現代環境科學作為支撐趨利避害，明瞭自己該做什麽不還做什麽。我們應該善待我們的環境，同時摒棄自以為能夠對自然為所欲為的科技迷信，以及對人自身的盲目崇拜。只有這樣才會“得之者生，順之者成。”
