这些树上伶俐的身影就是分布很广的树松鼠。它们也是白天活动的动物，大多住在树洞或枝桠间的巢窝中，白天常单独出来，在树上的时间比较多。当它遇到两株距离较远的树，就会表现出跳远的绝技，先在起跳点附近来回走动，接着后蹲，双腿一蹬，轻轻一跃，就见它灵巧地跳过去了。最常见的树松鼠活动就是寻找食物，它们鼻子挨着树干或地面一边走着一边来回嗅着，碰到喜欢吃的食物就用前爪构取，然后捧着。有时是规规矩矩地坐着吃，顽皮起来还会倒吊着身体吃呢!在秋天，树松鼠也会贮藏食物，不过它们的内颊囊袋已经退，因此，每次只能叼一颗果实，带到落叶堆。树洞或在地下挖洞藏起来。台湾的树松鼠有带纹松鼠。荷氏松鼠和赤腹松鼠。台湾带纹松鼠体背有三条黑色纵带，其间分布淡色纵带，体型最小。
荷氏松鼠和赤腹松鼠很像，头。体背和四肢都有褐色毛，而且体型相近，但是吻鼻部分比较长，所以又叫长鼻台湾松鼠。三种之中以赤腹松鼠最常见，从平地到高山都可发现它们的踪迹。赤腹松鼠很机灵敏捷，它平常小跑步的速度约为每秒三公尺，可是如果彼此打斗追逐起来，每秒可达二十公尺以上。它们常会发出[ 卡戚] 的叫声，遇到危险时，会不停地拍动尾巴，甚至将尾巴向前伸直，竖起毛发，眼睛瞪着目标物，口中不断地发出[ 咕─咕─ ] 的长音，愈叫声音愈高，最后就变成沙哑的[ 啾─ ] 声。
