有关元宵节的由来，据说是在汉武帝时代，宫中有位宫女叫做“元宵”，很想念家中的亲人，但又无法出宫，有位大臣叫东方朔，他知道后决定要帮助元宵，于是他想了个办法。东方朔假扮成算命师，来为人民算命并说：“正月十五火焚身，就是指那天会有一位骑驴的女子，来烧这里，但只要在正月十三那天，城里的老人都到城门等候，天黑时，女子就会来，只要跪地祈求，全城便可得救。”

果然在正月十三那天来了一位骑驴的女子(其实是元宵妹妹扮的)。女子说：“我是领旨来烧城的，但百姓求情，我就给你们一个预言：长安在劫，火烧帝阙，十六天火，燄红宵夜。”说完便离去了。汉武帝知道后请东方朔想办法，东方朔说：“听说火神爱吃汤圆，就叫元宵来做吧，毕竟她最会做汤圆，另外还要臣民一起做灯，十五晚上挂满大街小巷，并点燃爆竹，到时候，火神就会以为那是大火，一定能瞒过祂。十五的晚上元宵照东方朔的指示，果然见到自己的家人;从此以后，这个习俗就流传下来，也因为供奉的汤圆是元宵做的，所以人们也叫汤圆“元宵”，正月十五也称做“元宵节”。

每逢元宵节除了提灯笼、吃元宵外，当然各地都会办的就是猜灯谜活动。但如今各地都有许多不同型态的节庆安排，像放天灯、放蜂炮、炸寒单等，变成每年固定举办的民俗庆典活动，也象征年节即将告一段落，代表过完元宵后，又将是上学、工作的开始了。

大家听了都点头称是，便分头准备去了。到了正月十五这天晚上，天帝往下一看，发觉人间一片红光，响声震天，连续三个夜晚都是如此，以为是大火燃烧的火焰，心中大快。人们就这样保住了自己的生命及财产。为了纪念这次成功，从此每到正月十五，家家户户都悬挂灯笼，放烟火来纪念这个日子。

元宵节是我国民间传统节日，也是我最喜欢的节日之一。

关于元宵节，还有一个有趣的传说。传说在很久很久以前，有一只神鸟降入人间迷了路，却不幸被猎人射死了。天帝知道后非常愤怒，就派天兵在农历正月十五日火烧人间，人间一片慌乱。后来有一位智者想出了办法，他要人们在正月十四、十五、十六日家家户户挂灯笼、放烟花。到了那天，天兵看到人间一片红光，就以为人间被烧毁了。人们就这样保住了性命和财产。为了庆祝这成功的创举，人们想出了一系列丰富多彩的活动。有赛龙舟，比赛谁划船快;有舞龙狮，人们顶着假龙狮做出各种各样的动作;有吃元宵、踩高跷等;其中我最喜欢的活动是猜灯谜，在古代，人们把纸条贴在灯笼的外侧，写上灯谜，挂在街上让人们猜……文人墨客为了纪念元宵节留下了很多经典诗句。如元好问的“袨服华妆着处逢，六街灯火闹儿童”有张枯的“三百内人连袖舞，一进天上着词声”……虽然元宵节从古到今保持下来，但已经有较大的变化。

尽管如此，元宵节还是我国重要的传统节日。
