Its long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I dont remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. Its

pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine, though I didnt think shes beautiful. But shes smart. However, I didnt pay much attention to the plot. I thought its so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I havent read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.

In fact, I didnt understand the story at that time. I didnt know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didnt find where s the prejudice. I thought its normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingways most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.

Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.

My first impression of this story was from screen.

Its long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I dont remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. Now, I think I have understood more about it. Im a prejudiced person so I cant find wheres wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

This year summer vacation, I read the American well-known writer Hemingways novel “ old person and sea ”。 I extremely admire in the novel the senior fishermans will, he let me understand one person certainly must have relentless spirit, only then could obtain successfully.

The novel description is one year near sixty years of age senior fisherman, when alone goes to sea in one fishing, fished one big fish, actually did not pull. The senior fisherman socialized several days after the fish, only then discovered this was the big marlin which one surpassed the oneself fishing boat several fold, although knew perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up. Afterwards and further because in the big marlin wound fish fishy smell brought in several crowds of shark fish snatches the food, but the old person still did not hope like this to give up, finally highlighted encircles tightly, returned to the big fish belt the fishing port, lets other fishermen not admire already.

When I read “ the senior fisherman think: Here to the seacoast really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fish in a farther place… ” When, I extremely admire this senior fisherman, because he by now already projected on some fish, but he had not settled to the present situation, but was approaches the bigger goal advance. Again has a look us, usually meets one slightly is difficult, we all complain incessantly. We will be the motherland future, will be supposed to like this old person same mind lofty aspiration, will even better pursue even better, the bigger goal.

When I read “ the big marlin start fast to gather round the young fishing boat hover, twined the cable on the mast, the old person right hand lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did utmost throws to its heart, one wail ended the big fishs life, it was static static floats on the water surface… ” When, my heart also liked together the big stone falls. I extremely admire old person that kind do not dread, the relentless spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficultly above. Just because had this kind of spirit, the senior fisherman only then achieved this life and death contest success. We also must study senior fishermans spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty, only then can obtain successfully.

Was reading the big fish’s smell of blood is smelled by one crowd of shark fish, struggled swims snatches the food, old person’s left hand happen to in the convulsions, he only could use the right hand, with wooden stick, the mouth and so on all was allowed to use for the weapon self-defense which attacked, and finally expelled this crowd of shark fish. But the big fish’s meat was already eaten one most, but the old person also charmingly criticized oneself the left hand " this work time actually was resting " time, I also was subdued by the old person optimistic spirit. In the life, some losses are inevitable, we should treat by the optimistic manner, cannot be calculating.

Finally, the novel sees by one youth the senior fisherman fully has 18 foot long big marlin in the measure, once more described this fish’s hugeness, explained senior fisherman overcomes the difficulty was big, non- was more common than.

The novel eulogized the spirit which the senior fisherman fear hard and dangerous diligently did not struggle, we also should like his such, could not satisfy the present situation, should positively to above, do any matter all is relentless, meets difficultly must welcome difficultly above, could give up halfway in no way. Only has this, we only then can obtain a bigger success and the victory.

"Jane Eyre" is the British modern literature a significant position of the novel, is the representative of the author Charlotte, he has successfully created a dare to struggle, dare to the image of women, the freedom and equality indeed, after I read this book, I was very moved, also deeply such a defiant, brave heroine infection.

The full text can be divided into four stages: at the home of aunt Reed, at the raund school, in Schonfeld, in Saint John.

Jane was born in England, young when she lost her parents, aunt Mrs. Reed in a dozen years spent at home, but Mrs. Reed not good to her, including her children, even the servants dont love her, her uncle John even often insulted her, perhaps this kind of living environment, give it to her the thought brought great restraint, her behavior is limited, she had to fight. When she had the first conflict with her cousin, Jane said without fear, "your boy is really vicious and cruel!" You are like a murderer, you are like a man who abused others, you are like the emperor of Rome. Although the result of the quarrel was obvious, Janes brave performance, the spirit of resistance, shook any reader.

Because Mrs. Reed did not like Jane and sent her to a school at random, but on the contrary, she agreed with Jane. She didnt want to stay at Mrs. Reeds home.

Jane entered the Rao Wald school. In this school, children, including Jane, suffer from cold and hunger, and be beaten, punished, cut, hair and other insults, meals are very bad, and their living environment is not healthy. A cold can not be timely treatment, destined to a half will take a number of trained typhus infection, the childs life, Jane in such a school, witnessed all her hatred of the school, the schools founder, especially hate Mr Hearst, he is a pseudo word Jun, this school is a hell on earth. Jane in this school had her alumni Helen * Burns said: "when we are beaten we should It is without rhyme or reason., fiercely fought back, I am sure we should fight back, fiercely fought back, the lessons learned that US, that he will never dare such a hit. This will further show the reader her indomitable adherence to the resistance. You have to be convinced.

The third part is the core part of the book, Jane a governess at Thornfield house. For Jane to say that this is a very strange place, is Janes first set foot on the society, contact with the outside world, where Jane met Mr. Rochester, although Rochester is older than Jane, who looks not beautiful, but their thoughts have a lot in common, naturally fell in love with Jane he. Jane does not care about Rochesters vast wealth and fame and fortune, she is a real emotion, a friendly and open, she hopes they are equal between. But when she thought Rochester was going to marry Ingram and wanted to leave her, she said angrily, "do you think I will stay and become your decisive person?

Do you think Im an automatic machine, a machine without feelings... Do you think Im poor, low, beautiful, short, and I have no soul and no heart

You are wrong! - my soul is exactly the same as you... And I talk to you now, and not through the custom, customary, not even by physical, human - it is my spirit that addresses your spirit, just as the two had passed through the grave, and we at Gods feet, equal - because we are equal.

I was moved by this passage. Yes, we are equal. Even if the beautiful and attractive miss Ingram has a good reputation, there is a strong hearted family teacher. Jane also challenges the upper class. After a few twists and turns, Jane and Rochester were finally able to walk together.

Jane had been treated unfairly from childhood, but she achieved her career success and happiness by virtue of her fearless, acting and fighting spirit. I threw her away and wished her a better life.

Though the unfair treatment in todays society may be rare, the spirit of resistance is indispensable to all of us. We must learn to resist and fight against it because we are equal.

Good afternoon, everyone。

The topic of my speech today is “Being a Good Listener”。

Good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship。

Many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed。

What I want to stress is that each of us should listen to others。 Show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them。 In a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other。

Thank you for your listening!

The novel is rich in poetry, symbolism and metaphor. It does not fit easily into a definite pattern, being neither a novel of "manners" in the tradition of Austen, or a straightforward Gothic Romance in the style of Mrs Radcliffe. What Charlotte Bronte did was to create a work which cleverly blends elements of the two styles, and which remains uniquely independent of them at the same time, since it addresses issues which were at the time rather controversial.

The novel is written in the first person, and thus magnifies the central character - the reader enters the world of Jane Eyre and is transported through her experiences at first hand. This at once makes the work subjective, especially since we know that Charlottes Brontes own life and experiences were so closely interwoven with the heroines. As well as this we learn only at the end of the novel that the events are being related to us ten years after the reconciliation with Rochester - thus the narrative is RETROSPECTIVE (looking back). CB is clever in blending the narrative so that at times Jane seems to be speaking as an adult with adult hindsight , while at others she she is "in the middle" of them, as a child or young woman. The indecision which is a central issue in the book, is heightened by this device. We never know, as readers, whether to be entirely trustful of Janes actions and thoughts, because we are never sure wheher she is speaking impulsively or maturely.

This intensifies the readers dilemma as to what is "right" and "wrong" in the dramatic relationships which are part of JEs life. Can we believe what the heroine says, or is she deceiving herself? The novel is primarily a love story and a "romance" where wishes come true but only after trials and suffering. The supernatural has its place, as do dreams, portents and prophesies. The heroine begins poor and lonely and ends up rich and loved; the orphan finds a good family to replace the wicked one; all the basic ingredients of classic romantic fairytale are present.

The romantic element is present in two forms in Jane Eyre; the "family" aspect is dealt with in the Gateshead, Lowood and Moor House episodes, which involve the exchanging of the wicked Reed family for the benevolent Rivers one; and the Love romance is dealt with in the Thornfield and Ferndean episodes. Both aspects are, of course linked and interwoven throughout the novel.

There is also a strong element of realism in the novel, which, married to the romantic aspect, enhances the novels strength. The sense of place is very strong; we are able to experience both exterior and interior settings with startling clarity throughout the story, in a series of vivid deive passages. The central characters are also realistic and their confrontations and sufferings change them in a believable way.

Even the unlikely is made plausible, with a unique blend of high drama and perceptive low comedy (the attack on Mason, for instance)

The more fantastic romantic aspects; the coincidences; the secrets; the supernatural occurrences, are balanced by the realism, and this is of course a major strength.

The Gothic influence cannot be ignored, although CB has refined the technique considerably from the "authentic" Gothic of the 1790s. In the original genre, the heroine would typically be abducted and threatened with seduction, or worse!. There would be a lover - a respectable, well-bred young man - who would endeavor to rescue the heroine and would succeed after many trial. the seducer would be a brigand "Know that I adore Corsairs!" and he would lock the girl up in a remote castle.

There was little freedom for middle class women during the period of the Gothic novel, and this was still the case in the time of CB. Marriage especially was often a bargain, whereby fortunes were secured by using the female as a pawn. A womans value largely depended therefore on her sexual purity and she was guarded and secured as a result. Men, on the contrary, were potent and free; lovers and mistresses were common. Ironically the women who provided their services were social outcasts as a result.

In Jane Eyre we see elements of the Gothic romance, in that Thornfield Hall and Rochester are described very much in the brigand/castle style BUT Jane Eyre is not abducted by R. On the contrary she chooses to go there of her own free will. AND she is clear in her determination to have Rochester as a husband. Neither is there a gentleman rescuer; St John Rivers may look like a Greek God, but he is neither kind nor benevolent; driving Jane back to Ferndean, not rescuing her from it.

The trials which the hero is supposed to undergo in a Gothic romance are in fact undergone by the heroine in Jane Eyre. The bandit Rochester is only skin-deep. Underneath the brooding exterior is a sensitive soul, which a WOMAN frees. In this way we see that CB created rather a daring departure from conventional fiction, although there are still many aspects of the novel which remain true to Victorian convention.!

The first impression that the boy Tom gave me was a naughty, mischievous boy, just as what Aunt Polly said. He never lacked the curiosity to explore new places, sometimes even risking his life, which I did not dare to! There were some great adventures of him with Huck or Joe. Huck was an orphan, and Joe was Tom’s classmate. Everybody in the small village knew Tom, mainly for Tom’s—you know kind of gallantry!

I should tell you the adventures. The origin of the attempt was that Tom and Huck was getting curious to the world of outside, and they made an effort to run-away. However, when they were in the graveyard, some people appeared. They were Injun Joe, Huck’s father, named Potter, and a doctor. Tom and Huck quickly hid behind the bush, and they saw them digging the coffins out, probably finding something valuable. They did not realize that what they witnessed was a murder! Tom and Huck were extremely afraid, and they ran away rapidly. On the court, Potter was being accused of the murderer; however, Tom declared that it was Injun Joe who used Potter’s knife to kill the young doctor. On hearing this, Injun Joe broke the glass and ran away! This scared everybody, and Tom’s brother, Sid, said that he always heard Tom mumbling something when he was asleep, and sometimes even shouting. Indeed, the accident was fluttering everybody in the town with fear.

Before, Tom once fell in love with a girl called Lawrence. And he showed off in front of the girl, trying to win the girl’s heart, but Lawrence ignored Tom’s appearance, and it made Tom sad. At present, Tom went for another girl for Becky. Yet, when Becky knew that Tom once loved Lawrence (it was probably childish thoughts), she refused Tom. Tom got so depressed that he resolutely committed the second escape.

He made contact with Huck and Joe that afternoon, about where to meet, the code words of meeting, and the route, and so on and so forth. Each of them brought some food, and Huck brought some pipes (remind that Huck had no real home, and I had no ideas where he got the things). At midnight, they met at the place, and they took a raft down the river. After drifting for about several hours, they finally reached the destiny. There they lived for about several weeks, and while everybody thought they were drowned, they had a great time. They were no problems of food or water shortages. They promised to be a pirate, and would live there forever.

If you were out from your relatives for a long time, wouldn’t you miss home? It was the same for those children. After several weeks, Joe felt that he missed home very much, and Tom could not seem to stop him. On this, Tom brought Joe and Huck his secret—

On one night, when the rest of the boys fell asleep (of course they slept outside), Tom crept from the camp, and headed toward the town. He sneaked to his aunt’s room, and hid under the bed, while everybody- Mary (Tom’s sister), Sid, Aunt Polly and Joe Harper’s mother were having a meeting. There were a lot of tears, about how the boys were killed, and how they would treat the boys if they ever lived again, such things. Tom almost wanted to get out of the bed and hug Aunt Polly, but he couldn’t. At last, everybody went to sleep. Tom went out from the bed, and flew to the camp. That was the secret— that the boys will go to their own funeral!

While the boys were outside, all of the people in the town were discussing about the accidents. The town was immediately covered with a sense of doom. So the funeral was raised. Everybody wore a black suit, and they prayed something along with the priest. Just then, they saw somebody entering the gate, and what they saw was unbelievable. Three young souls came out from their coffins and showed up in front of everybody! The change of the atmosphere was imaginable. Aunt Polly, Joe Harper’s mother, Mary and Sid were astounded to find that Tom came so vivid in front of them, and so Tom and Joe became a hero in the school, even in the town.

The real adventures of Tom were finding the treasures. However, I felt that I had no energy to write more…

After I read the book that is called “The old man and the sea” I was deeply moved by the old man and his spirit.

The book written by Hemingway tells us a story that an old man whose name is Santiago went out to do some fishing on the sea on his own but down on his luck he hadn’t caught any fish for 84 days. Next day he caught a huge marlin which is bigger than his boat and took a formidable battle with it. He beat it at the end. When he was on the way home the smells of blood of the marlin draw a lot of sharks’ attention and they fought for it. In order to protect the marlin and him the old man tried his best to fight with them. After a cruel fight he won it and came back home tiredly. Although he only got a skeleton of the giant marlin at last he is also a great hero in many people’s heart.

In the article the old man is a great man. Although he failed for many time in his life he never gave up. He is a steel-willing man who insisted his dream and work hard. You can destroy him but you can’t beat him. Whatever he faced to he would never yield to the difficult which shows a strong spirit.

In our lives I think we should learn something from the old man which will make us have a more valuable life. Whenever and wherever we meet trouble we should never give up and try our best to overcome it. We should always keep on our dream and make it come true. Every one has his backbone which can’t be bended by anyone which is very important for everyone in his whole life. If we meet difficulty in our life we should face it bravely and work out some way to solve the problem whatever would happen at last. We can be destroyed but we can’t be beat by anything or anyone. If you failed for many times in your life you wouldn’t surrender because if you try to do it you may succeed in your life but if you do not do it you would not be succeed forever. Everyone has his advantages and disadvantages in his life but we should face to our disadvantages and we must be confident which would also make us be confident of our life. We should have faith in what we do in our life we will have a more beautiful life in the future and our dream will come true. We should pay more attention to what we do during our life rather than what we will get at the end because I think it is more important than any thing you get finally. If you enjoy you life not something you get you will have a meaningful life and a noble spirit. It will hurt you when you pay more attention to what you get in the future. It will also make you do something wrong which is bad for other people our society and our country.

I’m impressed by the sentence which is “We can be destroyed but we can’t be beat.” I think everyone should do it no matter what happen in our life. This book makes me know something I didn’t know in the past. The book and the old man have a great influence in my life. I love this book.
