900 years ago.
Buddhism was well accepted in the areas inhabited by the Han Chinese, who
believed that Sakyamuni the first Buddha and founder of the religion, attained
enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth month. Sutras were chanted in the
temples and rice porridge with beans, nuts and dried fruit was prepared for the
Buddha. With the passing of time the custom extended, especially in rural areas
where peasants would pray for a plentiful harvest in this way.
There is, however, another touching story: When Sakyamuni was on his way
into the high mountains in his quest for understanding and enlightenment, he
grew tired and hungry. Exhausted from days of walking, he fainted away by a
river in India. A shepherdess found him there and fed him her lunch -- porridge
made with beans and rice. Sakyamuni was thus able to continue his journey.

said her mother very worried.

Along the way, she was quite tired, so she rested upon some big rocks. It
gradually became late and Jerry decided to go and buy the bread, but suddenly a
wolf cried out behind her; “Please, please help me!” cried the wolf, “I have a
problem that nobody wants to help!” then he held out his paw to Jerry, there was
a thorn stuck to his paw. “Is this a trick?” asked Jerry, “Because wolves like
to eat people.”
“Oh no,” answered the wolf, “We do not eat people now, we only want to eat
some bread with mustard on top;” then he cried again. Jerry quickly knelt down
and removed the thorn from the wolf’s paw; “Oh thank you! Thank you!” shouted
the wolf joyfully, “I shall never forget your kindness!” then the wolf returned
to his home. Jerry walked to the market to buy healthy fresh bread, and then she
ran back home with a full basket of it.
On the way, she was still tired; so she stayed at the same place. As she
was about to go, some greedy wolves blocked her way. They had water in their
mouths and said, “Give us the bread!” said a wolf, “Where are the mustard?”
asked a second wolf, “Just give it to us!” shouted the third wolf. Jerry had no
choice, as she was about to give the fresh bread away to the wolf, the wolf that
she had saved before rushed out and said, “Leave her alone!” he growled, “That
girl saved me before, and so leave her alone!” he shouted again.
The other wolves had no choice but to obey, they walked away. Jerry thanked
her new friend the wolf, and the wolf said that he was supposed to do that in
return. In order to show Jerry’s respect for him, she gave him half the bread,
and returned home immediately to tell her mother about it.
They had some bread that evening, and Jerry’s mother including Jerry
herself both became good friends with the wolf. The wolf also had plenty of
bread, and moved his home close to Jerry.
The moral of this story was: if you help others and they will help you in
return, you help them again then friends you’ll become. It will be a peaceful
life if friendship is all around us.

don’t finish today and wait for tomorrow then you will have to start from
scratch again.”
“You are right husband, but I still want to figure how much we have. How
about this, I will go to your brother Cassim’s house and borrow a measure, and
then measure how much we have, okay?” Ali Baba agreed, for he was almost the
person in the world to find out how much they have.
And so the next morning Ali Baba’s wife went to Cassim’s house to borrow a
measure, Cassim’s wife came out and said, “Sister, we have lots of measures; you
are welcome to borrow any one of them.” And then she went to the basement, and
got a bag of measure, and then Ali Baba’s wife picked one and went back to her
house. When she approached, she knelt down and began to measure. After a short
time, she went to Cassim’s house again to return the measure, not noticing that
one piece of gold coin stuck to the bottom of the measure. “Here you are
sister,” she said as she put the measure down, “I have finished using it.” And
then went away.
Cassim’s wife did not take long to realize the piece of pure gold coin. She
took it off and called Cassim, “Husband, I know you suspect that you are a rich
fellow; but your brother Ali Baba is ten times as rich as you, he does not count
his money; but measures them.”
Cassim looked at the gold coin and knew at once, “Ali Baba just pretended
that he was a poor fellow and borrows anything we have,” Cassim was not even
pleased at his brother’s good fortune, but was the opposite. And then Cassim led
his wife to Ali Baba’s house, “Ali Baba, tell me, where did you get all of this
good fortune.” At that moment, Ali Baba knew that the secret had been spread
though his own wife’s stupidity. “Look Ali Baba, if you don’t tell me where you
got this gold; I shall tell everybody, and not only will you get no more, but
you will have no more gold in the rest of your life! Ha!” laughed Cassim.
And so Ali Baba told him where he found the gold, and even the words he
knew of how to make the door open and shut. And so Cassim woke up early the next
morning, and took with his ten donkeys to fill the gold. He arrived at the place
where Ali Baba had told him, and pronounced these words, “Open Sesame!” the door
instantly opened wide, and inside of course; he found a chamber of pure gold,
and in it was gold.
Cassim filled as many bags of gold as he wanted. But when the robbers
arrived he was still filling. When the robbers found out, they used their swords
and soon killed him.

All the people gave him a slow clap, and at last began to ask questions.
Two more days passed and the professor got better, and walked to the stage. But
he found that on his throne was the old man. “Ah! Professor!” shouted the old
man in an angry tune, “You quit! I heard you say that a week ago!” “I said that
I was going to quit about two days because I was sick,” explained the professor
smiling.
“I think I should be king rather than you!” shouted the old man, “Fine! I
shall ask you a hard question, if you could answer it; then you ask me one. But
if not, the guards shall make you my breakfast, next month!” “Deal,” said the
professor, still smiling. And so the hard question contest began.
First the old man asked, “What’s the answer of 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1?” “That’s
easy,” said the professor, and he wrote it on a paper. When he is finished, he
handed the paper over to the old man; it said, “If you want to find the answer,
you said eight 1. All you have to do is use multiplication to find the answer:
8﹡1.” The old man was astonished, “Your right!” he shouted; “Now you ask me
