I am a third year master major in automation at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, P. R. China. With tremendous interest in Industrial Engineering, I am writing to apply for acceptance into your Ph.D. graduate program.

Education background

In 1995, I entered the Nanjing University of Science & Technology (NUST) -- widely considered one of the China’s best engineering schools. During the following undergraduate study, my academic records kept distinguished among the whole department. This year, I won the Acer Scholarship as the one and only candidate in my department, which is the ultimate accolade for distinguished students endowed by my university. Presently, I am preparing my graduation thesis and trying for the honor of Excellent Graduation Thesis.

Research experience and academic activity

When a sophomore, I joined the Association of AI Enthusiast and began to narrow down my interest for my future research. In 1997, I participated in simulation tool development for the scheduling system in Prof. Wang’s lab. With the tool of OpenGL and Matlab, I designed a simulation program for transportation scheduling system. It is now widely used by different research groups in NUST. In 1998, I assumed and fulfilled a sewage analysis & dispose project for Nanjing sewage treatment plant. This was my first practice to convert a laboratory idea to a commercial product.

In 1999, I joined the distinguished Professor Yu-Geng Xis research group aiming at Network flow problem solving and Heuristic algorithm research. Soon I was engaged in the FuDan Gene Database Design. My duty was to pick up the useful information among different kinds of gene matching format. Through the comparison and analysis for many heuristic algorithms, I introduced an improved evolutionary algorithm -- Multi-population Genetic Algorithm. By dividing a whole population into several sub-populations, this improved algorithm can effectively prevent GA from local convergence and promote various evolutionary orientations. It proved more efficiently than SGA in experiments, too. In the second semester, I joined the workshop-scheduling research in Shanghai Heavy Duty Tyre plant. The scheduling was designed for the rubber-making process that covered not only discrete but also continuous circumstances. To make a balance point between optimization quality and time cost, I proposed a Dynamic Layered Scheduling method based on hybrid Petri Nets. The practical application showed that the average makespan was shortened by a large scale. I also publicized two papers in core journals with this idea. Recently, I am doing research in the Composite Predict of the Electrical Power system assisted with the technology of Data Mining for Bao Steel. I try to combine the Decision Tree with Receding Optimization to provide a new solution for the Composite Predictive Problem. This project is now under construction.

Xian was called Changan in Han Dynasty. The connotation of "Changan" is "a place of permanent peace". Chequered with the Weihe, Jinghe, Luohe, and Bahe rivers as well as the Jinghui, Weihui and Luohui canals, the fertile land on the plain has easy access to irrigation facilities and an abundant yield of farm produce. A thumbnail-sized patch of oil can kill little penguins the smallest of the species measuring just 13 inches (33cm) and weighing 2.2lbs (1kg). The oil separates and mats their feathers breaking natural waterproofing and heating functions.

Ms Blom estimates she has knitted between 200 and 300 penguin jumpers over the years including ones in the colours of every Australian Rules football team in the country.

A staff member read an article in an English women’s magazine about knitting for guillemot birds and decided to adapt the designs.

‘There’s an awful lot of ladies out there who used to knit for their children and grandchildren. These ladies have spare wool and idle hands and they love to feel loved and needed and we love and need them’ said Ms Blom.

The Penguin Foundation recently staged a competition for the most creative jumper which received an enthusiastic response.

The Penguin Foundation rescues approximately 20 birds a year. They even have a stockpile of jumpers in case of emergency - such as the large oil spill near Phillip Island in 2001.

In that instance 453 Little Penguins were affected 96 percent of which were saved - most thanks to the jumpers.

The "Chong Yang Festival" is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, and it is as such known as the Double Ninth Festival.

Origins: The festival began as early as the Warring States Period (475 - 221 BC). According to the yin/yang dichotomy that forms a basis to the Chinese world view, yin represents the elements of darkness and yang represents life and brightness. The number nine is regarded as yang. The ninth day of the ninth month is a double yang day, hence the name "Chong Yang Festival". (Chong means "repeat" in Chinese.) The ninth month also heralds the approach of winter. It is a time when the living need warm clothing, and filial Chinese sons and daughters extended this to make the festival a time for providing winter clothes for their ancestors. The Double Ninth Festival, therefore, also became an occasion to visit the graves of dead family members. Clothes made of paper would then be burnt as offerings.

Climbing mountains: On the Double Ninth Festival, people customarily climb mountains, appreciate chrysanthemum flowers, drink chrysanthemum wine, and eat double-ninth cakes. The Double Ninth Festival is also the "Old Men Festival". Old people are especially meant to improve their health by taking part in the activities on the day of the festival.

Family get-togethers: The Double Ninth Festival is also a time for family get-togethers. It is an occasion to remember one‘s ancestors, the sacrifices they made and the hardships they underwent. Often, family outings are organised during which people search to renew their appreciation of nature and to reaffirm their love and concern for family members and close friends.

当大地还沉浸在美梦之中，当山峦还笼罩着一片苍茫，这时的天边刚露出一点点的鱼肚白，小半个太阳立在天边，用它的光芒染红了天际。隐约中，我看到一条银灰色的巨龙卧在峰峦叠起的山顶，它雄伟壮阔，昂首东望，眼睛看着前方，像在等待自己的亲人。

太阳慢慢升起，光线照得巨龙越来越清晰。“哇！长城——”随着无人机的镜头，我俯瞰大地，陡峭的山峰上披着一件绿衣裳，显得更加威风，远远望去，长城像一条银色的丝带，柔软地飘浮在这绿色的海洋里。

我向前走去，长城也向我走来，渐渐的，我们隔得越来越近，直到我的双脚踏到它坚实的台阶上。长城四周的墙上布满了青苔，有些青苔融合在一起，给长城披上了一件绿衣。

我继续向前走去，前方不远处有一大块凹凸不平的土台，土台的四周是残缺的城墙，看来这是一处倒下来的长城。我在想，它是怎么倒的？难道是孟姜女哭倒的？

传说很久以前，一个叫孟姜女的姑娘和一个叫范喜良的小伙子结婚了。有一天，孟姜女和范喜良吃饭的时候，从外面冲进来一队官兵，领头的说要带范喜良去修筑长城。孟姜女没有办法，只好同意。范喜良走后，孟姜女天天盼望着他回来，但等了三年，也没等回范喜良。于是，她决定去寻找丈夫。

孟姜女来到修长城的地方，问了许多人，终于从一个人口中得知，自己的丈夫已经死了。她听了，“呜呜”大哭起来，把八百里长城哭倒了，才发现范喜良的尸体，她抱着丈夫的尸体来到秦始皇面前，要求安葬。秦始皇见孟姜女很漂亮，便说：“可以呀，不过事成之后，你得留下。”

孟姜女假装说：“好吧。”

埋葬完丈夫，孟姜女便奔向大海，跳了进去……

看着眼前的土台，摸着厚厚的青砖，我仿佛看见了孟姜女和范喜良的身影，他们的身影给长城涂上了一种不一样的色彩，让长城看起来像是一条雄伟的长龙，想起来是一首凄婉悲壮的歌。
