Cellular phones have had a major impact on our lives and the way that we

perform every day tasks. Many of these changes are apparent, while others we may

not even be aware of.

Cell phones have brought a whole new meaning to the term multitasking.

Twenty years ago, it was not possible to talk to the office while you were at

the grocery store picking up some necessary items. You could never have had a

three-way business conference while you were fixing dinner or been able to deal

with a business client from home while caring for a sick child. Cell phones have

enabled us to do various tasks all at the same time.

Cell phones have also enabled families to keep in closer touch with each

other. Children can contact you if they have missed their ride form soccer

practice and your spouse can call while he is stuck in traffic to let you know

that he is going to be late for supper. Teenagers are able to call to ask

permission to go somewhere, and with GPS features that are now available on some

cell phones, you are able to check to make sure that they are where they are

suppose to be.

Many of these advantages we do not even notice. Have you ever arrived at

the grocery store and realized that you have forgotten your grocery list? The

first thing you would probably do is to call home and have one of your children

read the list off to you. In the same situation in past years, you may have

forgotten things or have had to drive all the way back home to get it. If your

car breaks down, you automatically call for help instead of having to walk to

find a pay phone. Cell phones have certainly made our lives much more

convenient.

Cell phones have also changed the way that people interact with each other.

When we call someone, we are actually calling the person and not a place. This

enables us to be more spontaneous when making plans as you rarely get a busy

signal and unlike a land line telephone, someone is always home. Cell phones

also enable us to call if we are going to be late for an appointment, although

this has led to cell phone users running late more often than those who do not

have cell phones. These users seem to have adopted the attitude that appointment

times are not concrete and use their cell phones to renegotiate their arrival

time.

One of the greatest disadvantages of the cellular phone is the fact that we

do not talk to strangers when traveling anymore. In the past, several people

waiting for a bus would engage in a conversation while they were waiting. People

who traveled the same routes every day might develop friendships along the way.

This situation does not happen anymore. Today when people are waiting for a bus,

they just pull out their cell phones and speak with old friends, missing out on

the opportunity to make new ones. In large cities, many people do not know their

neighbors, even though they may have lived in the same neighborhood for years.

As a society, we are beginning to lose the face-to-face contact that was such an

important part of our lives in the past.

Cell phones are a great asset in aiding in our every day lives. You should

remember, however, to hang up every once in a while and pay attention to the

world around you.

To a Chinese, the task of learning English well is not easy.

We need to improve our English skills in each of four areas.

The first one is listening skills . I think doing lots of listening practice is a great way to improve listening skills. Maybe you could buy some English tapes or borrow your teacher’s tapes to listen .

The second on is speaking skills. How can we practice our spoken English ? I think the first and the most important thing is to believe yourself . Your should often encourage yourself , then you can join an English –language club and make lots of conversations with you partner . I think it can help a lot.

The third one is reading skills. I think we should do more reading in our free time. If you have any problems when you are reading , you’d better ask others tof help.

The last one is wring skills. It’s very important for us to learn English . I think keeping a diary in Engish is the best way to improve your writing skills. You should practice writing notes or letters every day, or you could find a pen pal . I think it sounds like a very interesting way to practice writing. And don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

I am a December 2003 graduate from the University of San Francisco (USF) with a bachelors degree in International Business. As part of my career planning, I am very interested in supplementing my international business education with a basic knowledge of the Chinese language. This I hope will help me enter into business commerce with business organizations partnering with Chinas economic development.

I already have information from BLCU and hope to study there for at least one full year starting with this summers program continuing through the fall and spring semester 2006. Can your office advise me if such scholarships might be available to me?

I have been studying Chinese for one year now. I am not sure what level I belong to. I was told that there will be an HSK test in our university in September. I am planning to attend the test. But I dont know if the result of the test is recognized by your university. If so, can it be a help for me to apply for the scholarship?

Liu Kai is my classmate. He is a good student and always ready to help others.

One day on his way to school，he saw a little girl crossing the road. A car was coming towards her quickly and the girl was too frightened to move. The car nearly hit her. We set out early in the morning. We first took the subway and then the bus. We got a view of the beautiful scenery. After a while, we got to the Great Wall. Peter was very excited. He touched the bricks frequently. I explained to him when and how’ we Chinese built the wall. He listened with great interest. When we entered a turret, Peter was more curious. I told him what the turret was and what it was built for. "It was really an amazing achievement!" Peter gasped with admiration and took several photos. Unconsciously, we found we had reached the Stele of Brave Man, the symbol of the Great Wall. A lot of visitors gathered around it and took photos. I translated the words on the stele for Peter. "Only the one who can reach the Great Wall is a brave man." "Really?" Peter asked jokingly. We both laughed.

他们想着这肯定是一瓶好酒，但是五个人来分的话又不够喝。怎么办呢？于是，他们想了一个办法，每个人在地上画一条蛇，谁先画完，谁画得最漂亮，这瓶酒就归谁喝。五个仆人都觉得这个办法很公平，所以就答应了。

然后，他们找了一块空地，每人拿了一根小树枝在地上画了起来。其中，一个仆人先画完了，他想去拿酒。当他看到别人都还没有画完时，他为了显示自己画画能力高超，就自作聪明的在蛇的身体下添了几只脚，不料，蛇从地面上走了出来。五个仆人全都吓了一跳，连忙跑走了。他们以为一跑起来蛇就不追了。可是，蛇依然在他们的身后拼命地追着。

As it is known to us all, there are 55 minority groups in China, each with its traditional customs, costumes and culture. Now let’s take a look at the Tibetan Minority.

The Tibetan Minority group live in Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan Province. And the highest ridge in the world─beautiful and mysterious Tibet is their major habitat .

As the fertilized prairie stretches around the habitants as far as the eyes can see, most people live on animal husbandry, raising sheep, goats, cattle and growing a special kind of plant called Qingke. On account of the unique climate, people often wear warm and comfortable boots in winter, and they are always dressed in delicate robes which are made of the fur of sheep. Often they take off one sleeve of the clothes and tie it around their waists in order to work easily and use it as warm quilts at night.

Both men and women there like wearing silver ornaments, which look very mysterious and full of magical power. And they are good at singing and dancing, and the men there can have braids too. When they meet an important guest, they will present him or her a Hada, a piece of long white silk cloth to show their respect. And they will also treat the guest to a special kind of drink called Suyou Tea, which some people find hard to enjoy.

Besides, the habitants have developed both their own written and spoken languages, and the long poems they wrote play an important role in Chinese literature. And there are many well-protected culture relics as well, taking the grand Budala Palace as an example. It is a historical museum as well as an art treasury, where people can share their spirit belief in Buddhism and get artistic entertainment of the carved paintings and the beautifully-written chirographies.

The Tibetan ethnic group is also famous for its strange custom in funeral. Thinking that the soul belongs to the sky after a person dies, they usually put the body on a platform outdoors, spray on it and wait the condors to come to eat the body. In this way, they believe the soul goes up to the sky.

The Tibetan Minority is brimming over with deep emotions. The people there are very zealous and hospitable and they live freely and happily on the spacious grassland. Their history and culture contribute to the diversity of China, so we certainly should protect them and get them popularized and let them receive great respect they deserve.

My dream home is an old castle in France. There are at least thirty rooms in it. It has three floors.

There is a big sitting room and dining room on the ground floor. It must have a very large window on the ground floor. I can look out of the window.

There are six bedrooms on the first floor. Maybe my good friends can live in the rooms. There is a bathroom in each bedroom. I would like my friends to have a shower or a bath in my castle.

There is a special room on the second floor. I can put all my clothes in the room. The room must be next to my bedroom. There is a big bed in my own bedroom. It is two meters long, because I love to sleep. There is a bathroom in my bedroom.

There is a very large garden outside my house. I can have breakfast in this garden. I can have parties in it. The garden is like a park. There are many kinds of flowers and trees in it. In the centre of the garden, there is a wooden swing. I can play on it.

This is my dream home. It is a nice dream.

I have a good friend, her name is Lily. We met each other since we were

five years old. At that time, I moved next to her house, because of my father’s

work. I felt so lonely when I facing the new environment. Then someday, Lily

played in her yard and when she saw me, she smiled at me and asked me to play

with her. I was shy at first, but then I was affected by her kindness. We became

good friends soon. When I meet difficulties, she will help me without

hesitation. I am so thankful to her, I am so lucky to have her as my friend. Our

friendship is precious.

I am studying in a middle school now, it is my second year.If you ask

mewhat my occupation is, I will answer you that my occupation is student.I

havestudied for many years, many students don’t like being a student, but I am

notof them, I enjoy being a student.For me, I don’t have to worry about the

moneyissue, I can go to play with my friends, the most important thing is, I

likereading all kinds of books.I especially like to read the books about

travel.Ihave a dream, when I earn enough money, I must travel around the

world.So Imust work hard to realize my dream.

Last year’s Spring Festival is special. My uncle and my aunt came back from Shanghai. My family were very happy to keep the Spring Festival with them. And it was the most exciting festival of all the festivals.

On New Year’s Eve, my father and my uncle talked about their work together. My mum did some cooking with my aunt Grandparents and I watched the New Year TV programmes. At about six o’clock, we had a special family dinner. We all thought the dumplings were delicious.

On the first day of the New Year, we visited our relatives. In the afternoon, we went shopping in Jiefanf Road. My uncle bought some Jay’s CDs. He likes Jay’s music very much. There were so many people on the road. It was more alive than any other time of a year.

On the second and the third days, we spent a wonderful weekend in the country. There were much bigger trees than in the city. And the animals were more beautiful than in the city. We all enjoyed ourselves.
