An important activity during the Spring Festival is bainian (to pay a New Year call).

People start to pay New Year calls from the lunar New Years Day，that is， the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar. Ever since the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century，ordinary people have begun to exchange greeting cards on this day. On the morning of the lunar New Years Day，people get up very early and call on others. The earlier one does so，the more sincere he is. Moreover，people wear new clothes and a new cap，symbolizing that a new year has begun.

The younger generation should call on their elders first，such as the grandfather，grandmother，father and mother，wishing them "Good health" and "Long life". Then the elders give children some money in a red envelope as a New Year gift. After that，people call on their relatives，friends and neighbors. As "big tangerine" is a homonym for "very lucky" in Chinese，so people often present red big tangerines as a gift while paying a New Year call.

Nowadays，besides greeting cards，people also use telephones and e-mails to pay New Year calls.

The Spring Festival is very important to Chinese people. In the past,people could not often have meat,rice or other delicious food. They could only eat these during the Spring festival. So every year they hoped that the Spring Festival would come soon. Now, although people‘s life is much better,and we can eat the delicious foods everyday. People still like the festival. The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle（月运周期）is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year （闰年）. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth（万物）, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.?

The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals（仪式）, united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.?

The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year’s Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or Weilu. I like spring festival because we are very happy on that day.Last festival we had a good time and I will never forget it.In the morning all my family were busy preparing for it.I helped to clean the house and my parents were cooking some delicious food.On that afternoon we had a big dinner.At night we made jiaozi and set off fireworks to celebrate the festival.In the meanwhile we watched TV.My parents gave me much lucky money.The next morning we said happy new year to everybody from door to door.
