瓜子、铁蚕豆、黄豆让全家聚在一起一边磨牙说话，一边盼着子时的来到。这时吃的瓜子皮都要扔在地上，撒上芝麻秸，大家一起踩碎，取意“岁岁平安”，“芝麻开花节节高”。那年春节人们对踩芝麻秸尤为钟情，因为解放，日子会真的“节节高”。

三十晚上包饺子是重头，大街小巷听的都是“咚咚”的剁馅声，其实那年并不是家家都买得起肉，做些老北京的鸽子盒儿，绿豆面摊个饼，上面撒上香菜、胡萝卜丝、水疙瘩丝，卷起，油炸，再剁在素白菜馅里全充肉了。

那一年的春节几乎被北平解放取代了，人们更多的是庆祝解放。

年糕也成了人们走亲访友的物件，有黄米、红米、白米的，“往年老盼着吃个年糕能年年高，现在解放了，大家都高了。”

那时人们的物质生活还是要用“穷”来形容，越是这样，就越讲究个吉祥话，讲究个理儿。倒水要胳膊往里弯着，否则说把财泼出去了，一地的瓜子皮不能往屋外扫，只能扫到屋里最里面的牛奇角堆着，否则说把财扫走了，说话中的忌讳就更多了。三十晚上会有邻居家的孩子挨家敲门，喊着“送财神了”，这时无论怎样也要给孩子一些钱，“财神来了哪能不接呀”。
