这些设计，完全突破了传统的设计理念，是一种领先世界的创新。这种新型混合堆利用次临界能源堆对能量的放大作用，可大幅度降低对聚变中子源强度的要求，为聚变技术应用于能源创造了条件; 而大量聚变中子的加入，又为改进或去除裂变堆的缺点提供了可能。因此，聚变和裂变的巧妙结合，应是未来核能源发展的康庄大道。目前“Z-FFR”概念研究在院及多个研究所、国防科工局、中国ITER中心、国家自然科学基金委的支持下应该说达到了相当深入的程度。Z-FFR中的次临界能源堆以天然铀、反应堆乏燃料为核燃料，以轻水作慢化、传热介质，可以在聚变中子源的驱动下获得20倍左右的能量增益，并可保证氚的有效循环，且能够在核燃料循环中不断添加贫化铀及钍，达到不断烧铀-238和钍的目的。通过设计可将换料时间延长至5年或更长;其核燃料循环数百年内只需用“简便干法”进行(清除易挥发裂变产物)，不必进行铀-钚分离及铀同位素分离，也基本不向外界排放放射性物质(每年的放射性核废料仅200kg左右);可同时实现放能和嬗变自身产生的锕系元素的双重目标;而且，该系统始终处于次临界状态，不会出现超临界事故，容易设置非能动余热排出系统，可完全避免堆中核燃料熔化事故，安全可靠。

如果这项技术能够实现，那将是能源技术的一个重要突破，并将打破我国大规模发展核能所面临的资源、技术瓶颈。这种混合堆实现起来相对容易，运行也变得较为简单，最重要的是，这个系统可以经济地(估计每个Z-FFR造价约30亿美元)把裂变燃料的资源利用率提高到90%以上，能够为人类提供千年以上的能源。
