大学毕业后，丁磊回到家乡，在宁波市电信局工作。电信局旱涝保收，待遇很不错，但丁磊觉得那两年工作非常地辛苦，同时也感到一种难尽其才的苦恼。1995年，他从电信局辞职，遭到家人的强烈反对，但他去意已定，一心想出去闯一闯。

他这样描述自己的行为：“这是我第一次开除自己。人的一生总会面临很多机遇，但机遇是有代价的。有没有勇气迈出第一步，往往是人生的分水岭。”

他选择了广州。后来，有朋友问他为什么去广州，不去北京和上海?他讲了一个笑话：广州人和上海人，其实就是南方人和北方人的比较，如果广州人和上海人的口袋里各有一百块钱，然后去做生意，那上海人会用50块钱作家用，另外50块钱去开公司;而广东人会再向同学借100块钱去开公司。

初到广州，走在陌生的城市，面对如织的行人和车流，丁磊越发感到财富的重要性。最现实的是一日三餐总得花钱吧?也不可能睡在大街上成为盲流吧?那时，丁磊身上带的钱不多，他得省着花，因为他当初执意要打破“铁饭碗”，现在根本不容许自己混到走投无路的时候还要靠父母接济。那时，他最大的愿望就是希望能找到一份工作，哪怕钱少一点，但总比漂泊着强。

不知道去多少公司面试过，不知道费过多少口舌，凭着自己的耐心和实力，丁磊终于在广州安定下来。1995年5月，他进入外企Sebyse工作。

In 2012 I had the worst year of my life.
