历任国立北京大学教授、东方文学系主任，燕京大学新文学系主任、客座教授。新文化运动中是《新青年》的重要同人作者，并曾任“新潮社”主任编辑。“五四运动”之后，与郑振铎、沈雁冰、叶绍钧、许地山等人发起成立“文学研究会”;并与鲁迅、林语堂、孙伏园等创办《语丝》周刊，任主编和主要撰稿人。曾经担任北平世界语学会会长。
