比赛开始了。狐狸沿着羊肠小道飞奔一阵后，心想，我能找到一百条通向山顶老松树的路，哪条路都比那条羊肠小道近。它向四周望了望，没有看到其它动物，于是，它迅速离开羊肠小道，沿着一条捷径奔向山顶。老鼠沿着羊肠小道跑了一阵后，心想，傻瓜才按规定的路线跑呢。它很熟练地钻进路旁的一个地洞，这洞直通山顶。黄牛则不然，黄牛也能找到通往山顶的捷径，但它想，比赛规定是沿羊肠小道奔向山顶，如果走捷径那就是欺诈行为，而黄牛的处世原则是不欺诈。这个原则，黄牛在任何时候都不会放弃。

老鼠第一个到达老松树下，它的脸上露出得意的微笑，好像是在说，瞧，我赢了。狐狸第二个到达目的地，它看到老鼠先到了，脸上露出

不服气的神情。黄牛最后一个到达山顶，它看了看先到的老鼠和狐狸，心里很平静，它早已料到了这一结果。 虎大王早已等候在山顶。三名动物到达山顶后，它宣布比赛结果：黄牛胜利了，守卫一职由黄牛担当。

大家对此结果感到莫名其妙。

明明是黄牛落在后面，怎么能认定它赢了呢?

老鼠、狐狸都表示不服，在虎大王面前要讨个说法。

只见虎大王不紧不慢地说，这次比赛是规则测试，考的是谁能遵守规则，规则比速度更重要，你们懂吗?
