孟子认为「四端」是内在於自觉心的， 属於人的「本质」， 即所谓人的「性」。人之性， 必有异於禽兽之处， 这种「异於禽兽」的性，  便是「善端」。他指出， 人之所以不善， 是由於受私欲蒙蔽。因此， 人应放弃私利， 以达到社会的公义。目的是建立良好的个人道德观。

3.养气与成德
