北京故宫是依照中国古代星象学说，紫微垣(即北极星)位于中天，乃天帝所居，天人对应，所以故宫又称紫禁城。它始建于明成祖永乐四年，曾是明清两朝二十四位皇帝的皇宫，至今已有600多年历史。它是世界上现存规模最大、保存最为完整的木质结构古建筑之一，于1987年被列为世界文化遗产。

故宫在大部分人的眼里是一座庄严的皇家宫殿，但是在我这个从小自皇城根儿长大的孩子眼里，它是一座巨大的神秘乐园。每每从午门进入紫禁城，看到大门两侧高大厚实的红漆大门，都会让我注意到门上紧咬铁环的“椒图”和那整齐排列的九九八一颗金黄色的门钉。椒图，性好闭，最反感别人进入它的巢穴，它形像螺蚌。遇到外敌侵犯总是将壳口闭紧，人们将它用在门上，取“紧闭”之意，可保平安，另外椒图“性好僻静”，忠于职守，被民间称作“性情温顺”的龙子。

故宫被誉为世界上五大宫殿之首，是我国保存最完整的木质结构古建筑群，也是国家5A级旅游景区，同时它也被联合国教科文组织列为“世界文化遗产”。

故宫又名“紫禁城”。它的名字来自“紫微星”，紫微星属土，在五方属中，古代人相信紫微星位于苍穹的中心，而故宫也位于北京的中心，同时又是国家权力中心因而得名。故宫占地面积72万平方米，有大小宫殿七十多座，房屋共有九百九十九间半。据说天上玉帝有一千间房子，为了对天神的尊敬，所以建故宫时就比天上少了半间，这样神奇的传说让故宫充满了神秘色彩。

故宫城内的建筑分为外朝和内廷两部分，外朝是皇帝行使权力的地方，内廷是皇帝皇后及嫔妃生活起居的地方。站在故宫的广场上，可以看到一座座金碧辉煌的宫殿耸立着，洁白的玉石、栏杆，精雕细琢的青石基台，蓝色的琉璃瓦闪闪发亮，红色的柱子上雕刻着栩栩如生的金龙，显得华美大气、气势不凡。

太和殿琉璃鸳鸯瓦，朱漆大门，赤柱挺拔，雕梁画栋，檐牙高啄，错落有致。这气派的宫殿，它金碧辉煌，雄伟壮观，器宇轩昂，宛如一部雄壮的史诗令人心潮澎湃，又如一部宏伟的民族交响乐让人荡气回肠，更像一幅美丽的画卷使人流连忘返。这里是皇帝举行大典的场所，比如皇帝登基、大婚、册立皇后、公布皇榜、将士出征等大型庆典活动都在这里举行。中和殿是皇帝去太和殿大典之前休息的地方，后来也成为皇家修家谱的场所，每十年修一次。保和殿实际是皇家宴会厅，逢年过节，大将作战凯旋而归，公主出嫁，接待外国友人，每三年一次的殿试也在这里举行。由于这些宫殿修建豪华，但用的机会却很少，有的一年一次，有的三年一次，有的十年一次，所以“无事不登三宝殿”的俗语就在民间流传开来。
