《凡卡》讲述的是沙皇统治时期，凡卡，一个九岁的男孩，在三个月前被送到城里鞋匠阿里亚希捏那儿做学徒。虽说是做学徒，可却是去那里受苦。于是在平安夜晚，凡卡悄悄拿出纸笔，给远在乡下的爷爷写信，请求他带自己回乡下，并向爷爷诉说他这三个月来在莫斯科所遭受的虐待——给老板的儿子摇摇篮，伙计们打发他去打酒，吃的几乎没有……这些虐待使他无法再待下去了。

结局是这样的：凡卡把信寄出去后，怀着甜蜜的希望睡熟了，他梦见了爷爷，正在读他的信……
