Living alone or Living with Roommates

Population officials and demographers have much to worry about China’s increasingly aging population. It is estimated that the proportion of people aged 60 or older in China will rise to 11.8 percent in 2020. By the middle of this century, people aged beyond 60 will take up 27.4 percent of the total population — that means one out of every four people will be senior!

The aging population poses a serious challenge to families and the society. 记者几年前到国家贫困县山西大宁采访扶贫款被贪污案时，曾到一个家徒四壁的山民家里走访，这家主人，一个四五十岁的低矮老农，连遭不幸，不仅被干部用他的名字领扶贫款，却分文没给他，最小的男孩子还被山草中的蛇咬伤，性命垂危。当我们走进他山坳中的窑洞时，他哭了起来，我们力所能及地给了他一点资助，他扑通跪在地上以表感激。当知道他有多少孩子时，我们几个人都大吃一惊，八个。

这完全出乎我们的意料，多年来计划生育大好形势的宣传，使我们觉得农村最多能生两个，即使那些一味抗法、被扒屋毁灶的人，也只能有三到四个孩子。

而八个是什么数字?那是比1949年前还多的一个数字。也可能这些家庭比起1949年前，住房改善不大、食物够吃了但质量没好多少，但抗生素等类药品的普及确实使死婴现象少多了。1949年以前，一个农民家庭也能生很多孩子，但最终成活的只有一半强。所以虽然现在有计划生育的约束，农村人口还是猛增。

记者到陕西靖边采访时，发现那里的农民虽然被各种杂税弄得苦不堪言，而且土地日益干旱和荒漠化，生活很艰难，同样也生很多孩子。一个家庭有四五个孩子是很普通的，甚至是数量最少的。

一位女记者在山西大宁县一个很穷的山村金疙瘩村采访时，发现那里农民平均六个孩子。一个五六岁的小女孩告诉她，她有四个哥哥和一个妹妹。有人指着另一个红衣女孩说：“这孩子的父亲弟兄三个，每个都有六个孩子。”女记者了解到，金疙瘩村几乎没有三胎的，大多是五、六胎，最多的一家七胎，且大部分家中有二、三个男孩。

在连吃水都困难的地方，却要生那么多的孩子，他们一起向大地索要，于是大地更加贫困和病态。

贫穷、愚昧、受欺压，生孩子，这四者是紧密相联的。
