雾和霾从气象角度来讲是两种不同的天气现象，雾的主要特点是近地面层，它的高度大概不超过400米，是在这以下的气层里面的微小水滴组成的。雾的存在会降低空气透明度，使能见度恶化，如果目标物的水平能见度降低到1000米以内，就将悬浮在近地面空气中的水汽凝结(或凝华)物的天气现象称为雾(Fog)，而将目标物的水平能见度在1000-10000米的这种现象称为轻雾或霭(Mist)。形成雾时大气湿度应该是饱和的，就其物理本质而言，雾与云都是空气中水汽凝结的产物，所以雾升高离开地面就成为云，而云降低到地面或云移动到高山时就称其为雾。一般雾的厚度比较小，常见的辐射雾的厚度大约从几十米到一至两百米左右。雾和云一样，与晴空区之间有明显的边界，雾滴浓度分布不均匀，而且雾滴的直径比较大，从几微米到100微米，平均直径大约在10-20微米左右，肉眼可以看到空中飘浮的雾滴。由于液态水或冰晶组成的雾散射的光与波长关系不大，因而雾看起来呈乳白色或青白色。

霾主要成分是一种灰尘，通常所说的尘埃，比如硫酸、硝酸这样一些微小的颗粒物。霾的厚度比较厚，可达1-3公里左右。霾与雾的区别在于发生霾时相对湿度不大，而雾中的相对湿度是饱和的。一般相对湿度小于80%时的大气混浊视野模糊导致的能见度恶化是霾造成的，相对湿度大于90%时的大气混浊视野模糊导致的能见度恶化是雾造成的，相对湿度介于80-90%之间时的大气混浊视野模糊导致的能见度恶化是霾和雾的混合物共同造成的，但其主要成分是霾。霾与雾、云不一样，与晴空区之间没有明显的边界，霾粒子的分布比较均匀，而且灰霾粒子的直径比较小，从0.001微米到10微米，平均直径大约在1-2微米左右，肉眼看不到空中飘浮的颗粒物。由于灰尘、硫酸、硝酸等粒子组成的霾，其散射波长较长的光比较多，因而霾看起来呈黄色或橙灰色。

随着空气质量的恶化，阴霾现象出现增多，危害加重，因此，我国不少地区把阴霾天气现象并入雾一起作为灾害性天气预警预报，统称为“雾霾天气”。

雾霾对人体会产生什么样的危害呢?

(1)雾霾的危害主要在于一旦被人从呼吸道吸入，就会沉积于人的肺泡，沉积肺泡的烟尘被溶解后进入血液，容易造成血液中毒。

(2)未被溶解的部分被细胞吸收容易破坏细胞造成尘肺。

(3)霾中所含有的其他有害物质如二氧化硫主要是刺激人的呼吸道，对人的危害更大。

(4)雾霾严重时，其内的污染物杂质可使人的中枢神经发生病变，引起肺水肿或慢性气管炎，特别是当人们吸入肺部，严重时可导致肺气肿及肺癌等症。

(5)霾中的化学烟雾，当浓度达到某一界限后，就会对人的眼睛、呼吸道产生危害。霾中的一氧化碳，当其浓度为900PPm时，人接触1小时就会感到头痛、眼睛呆滞;当浓度达到1200PPm时，人接触1小时就会神经麻痹，有生命危险。霾中的碳氧化物，对人的眼、鼻和呼吸道有强烈的刺激作用，在一定条件下，将对肝、胃和心脏血管系统的功能产生破坏作用。

(6)雾霾天还会影响人的情绪，因为整天天气都处于阴霾沉沉，太阳昏黄阴暗，人体中的松果体会分泌出较多的松果体素，使得甲状腺素、肾上腺素的浓度相对降低。甲状腺素、肾上腺素等是唤起细胞工作的激素，一旦减少，细胞就会“偷懒”，变得极不活跃，人也就会显得无精打采。

人们需要采取哪些有效防护措施呢?

(1)减少出门是自我保护最有效的办法，尤其是有心脑血管、呼吸系统疾病的人群，更要尽量少出门。必须外出时记着戴口罩，不要开启车窗，减少对呼吸道的污染。

(2)可以暂时减少晨练，尽量选择在10—14时外出。同时，要多喝水，少吸烟并远离“二手烟”，减轻肺、肝等器官的负担。

(3)雾霾天必须外出，回到室内后要做到：洗脸最好用温水，可以将附着在皮肤上的阴霾颗粒有效清洁干净;漱口清除附着在口腔的脏东西;最关键的是清理鼻腔。

(4)在大雾天气升级的情况下尽量不要开窗;确实需要开窗透气的话，开窗时应尽量避开早晚雾霾高峰时段，可以将窗户打开一条缝通风，不让风直接吹进来，通风时间每次以半小时至一小时为宜。
