The term Guo Nian , which may mean Survive the Nian becomes today Celebrate the Year as the word guo in Chinese having both the meaning of pass-over and observe . The custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers to scare away Nian should it have a chance to run loose is still around. However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebratio

在刚刚结束的期末考试里，我犯了很多不该犯的错误，自己想起来当时，真是后悔莫及。

我一向语文很好，可是这次鬼使神差的，语文竟然错了很多不该错的地方。经过我的仔细反思，我想这和我作文题目不认真读有着很大的关系。这点也同样延伸到了数学和英语方面。很多计算和语法上的小错误让我丢掉了不少分数。

期末考试结束了，当试卷发下来的时候，让我大吃一惊，英语成绩竟然出乎我的意料之外的好，数学也是一样，只有语文稍微差了点，但也考了90分。回家后，我对自己好好地进行了反思。

I’m Li Hua. I go to school on foot. I have several reasons for that.

Almost everyone knows that water covers three-fourths of the earths

surface. Most of it， however， is in the oceans and is too salty to drink. Also，

some of it is frozen and cannot be used. In fact， less than one percent is left

for the use of people， animals and plant life. All through history men have

tried to build their homes near the sources of fresh water. Now fresh water is

becoming scarce， but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of

people in the world. Some industries also use large amounts of fresh water in

the production of things such as steel， petroleum， paper and rubber and so on.

Scientists estimate that the need for fresh water will have doubled by the year

2003. If they are correct， we must find new ways of saving it or producing it.

Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their

information with others. They are trying to keep their rivers from becoming

polluted. Deep wells are also being dug， and rain water is being collected in

huge artificial lakes. In one way or another， they hope to provide enough water

to satisfy the needs of their people.
