Lying at the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City, called Gu Gong, in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the worlds largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 buildings. The wall has a gate on each side. Opposite the Tiananmen Gate, to the north is the Gate of Devine Might (Shenwumen), which faces Jingshan Park. The distance between these two gates is 960 meters, while the distance between the gates in the east and west walls is 750 meters. There are unique and delicately structured towers on each of the four corners of the curtain wall. These afford views over both the palace and the city outside. The Forbidden City is divided into two parts. The southern section, or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Until 1924 when the last emperor of China was driven from the Inner Court, fourteen emperors of the Ming dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing dynasty had reigned here. Having been the imperial palace for some five centuries, it houses numerous rare treasures and curiosities. Listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987, the Palace Museum is now one of the most popular tourist attractions world wide.

Construction of the palace complex began in 1407, the 5th year of the Yongle reign of the third emperor of the Ming dynasty. It was completed fourteen years later in 1420. It was said that a million workers including one hundred thousand artisans were driven into the long-term hard labor. Stone needed was quarried from Fangshan, a suburb of Beijing. It was said a well was dug every fifty meters along the road in order to pour water onto the road in winter to slide huge stones on ice into the city. Huge amounts of timber and other materials were freighted from faraway provinces. Ancient Chinese people displayed their very considerable skills in building the Forbidden City. Take the grand red city wall for example. It has an 8.6 meters wide base reducing to 6.66 meters wide at the top. The angular shape of the wall totally frustrates attempts to climb it. The bricks were made from white lime and glutinous rice while the cement is made from glutinous rice and egg whites. These incredible materials make the wall extraordinarily strong.

Since yellow is the symbol of the royal family, it is the dominant color in the Forbidden City. Roofs are built with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on the ground are made yellow by a special process. However, there is one exception. Wenyuange, the royal library, has a black roof. The reason is that it was believed black represented water then and could extinguish fire.

Nowadays, the Forbidden City, or the Palace Museum is open to tourists from home and abroad. Splendid painted decoration on these royal architectural wonders, the grand and deluxe halls, with their surprisingly magnificent treasures will certainly satisfy "modern civilians".

我们先到了“太阳神厅”，看到了“太阳神”路易十四，他的两边聚集了许多神，连雅典娜都赶来了。众神有的拿着花冠，有的捧着一束鲜花，还有的举着宝剑保护着“太阳神”。

接着，我们来到战争厅，这里战神举着宝剑坐在由四匹马拉的车上，前面有好多小兵挥舞着大刀向前冲。此时，“太阳神”路易十四也骑着神马冲过来，这是一幅让人胆颤心惊的壁画，表达路易十四征南战北、统一法国的历史。

最后，我们参观了王后的“镜厅”、金色大走廊、国王会客室、皇家餐厅……凡尔赛宫真让我流连忘返。

第二天，我来到了欧洲最有名的博物馆——卢浮宫。我重点欣赏了世界最最著名的三宝——达芬奇的油画《蒙娜丽莎》、雕像《断臂维纳斯》和《胜利女神》。站在《蒙娜丽莎》面前，看着她的眼睛注视着我，微微笑着，我暗暗称奇，啊!真是世界名作!卢浮宫的宝贝多得数不胜数，据导游说，如果在每一件作品面停留一分钟，欣赏全部的作品需要3年，所以我只好走马观花。

另外，我还登上了埃菲尔铁塔，参观了凯旋门，游览了巴黎的母亲河——塞纳河。巴黎之行让我大开眼界。

我乘坐巴黎的有轨电车来到了巴黎圣母院。巴黎圣母院是一座哥特式风格的基督教教堂，它矗立在塞纳河畔，位于整个巴黎城的中心，是历史上最为辉煌的建筑之一，也是古老巴黎的象征。它的建造全部采用石材，整个建筑庄严和谐、辉煌壮丽，恍如童话中的皇宫一般。我静心漫步于巴黎圣母院内，它的祭坛、回廊、门窗等处的雕刻和绘画艺术，以及堂内所藏的13—17世纪的大量艺术珍品无不令人叹为观止。四处可见虔诚的信徒双手交叉合拢抵住下巴，闭眼凝神虔心祈祷，更突显巴黎圣母院的庄重肃穆。参观完神圣的巴黎圣母院后，我的巴黎之旅的最后一站就是卢浮宫。

卢浮宫位于塞纳河北岸，位居世界四大历史博物馆之首，原是它可是法国的王宫。白天的卢浮宫漂亮极了，阳光照在玻璃金字塔上就像彩虹照耀着宝石在空中熠熠生辉，这闻名世界的独特入口还是华人建筑大师贝聿铭设计的呢！卢浮宫分为六个部分，博物馆内的艺术品数量已达400000余件，有从古代埃及、希腊、罗马的艺术品，到东方各国的艺术品，有从中世纪到现代的雕塑作品，还有数量惊人的王室珍玩以及绘画精品等。尤其有幸的是我还看到了被誉为世界三宝的《维纳斯》雕像、《蒙娜丽莎》油画和《胜利女神》石雕。其中，我最喜欢的是那圣洁高雅的胜利女神，因为她象征着胜利，她有着人们对渴望自由的精神寄托…

结束了短暂的巴黎梦想之旅，巴黎浓浓的文化氛围给我留下了深刻的印象。我相信，有一天我一定可以真的踏上那块土地，去真真切切地感受它的魅力。
