Chinese New Years Eve is known as chú xī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve".

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year is a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.

Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), Tibetans and Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (T?t), and formerly the Japanese before 1873 (Oshogatsu). 春节放鞭炮的由来

中国人春节放鞭炮习俗由来已久，这是为什么呢?这就要从“年”的来历上谈起了。

民间的一种说法：古时候，有一种叫做“年”的凶猛怪兽，每到腊月三十，便挨门窜户，觅食人肉，残害生灵。有一年腊月三十晚上，“年”到了一个村庄，适逢两个牧童在比赛牛鞭子。“年”忽闻半空中响起了啪啪的鞭声，吓得望风而逃。它窜到另一个村庄，又迎头望到了一家门口晒着件大红衣裳，它不知其为何物，吓得赶紧掉头逃跑。后来它又来到了一个村庄，朝一户人家门里一瞧，只见里面灯火辉煌，刺得它头昏眼花，只好又夹着尾巴溜了。人们由此摸准了“年”有怕响、怕红、怕光的弱点，便想到许多抵御它的方法，于是逐渐演化成今天过年的风俗。

春节放鞭炮是源于驱除鬼怪的行为的，但是今天人们过年放鞭炮是为了喜庆，因为鬼怪被赶跑了，晦气也被赶跑了

这个习俗在我国已有2000多年的历史了。《荆楚岁时记》曾经这样记载，正月初一，鸡叫头一遍时，大家就纷纷起床，在自家院子里放爆竹，来逐退瘟神恶鬼。

当时没有火药，没有纸张，人们便用火烧竹子，使之爆裂发声，以驱逐瘟神，这当然是迷信，但却反映了古代劳动人民渴求安泰的美好愿望。

爸爸买了好几条鞭炮（一条有十盒）给我们玩，我和弟弟还有阿杰哥哥，我们三个人一起去活动场玩鞭炮，我们先把鞭炮点燃，然后扔到地上，等待鞭炮爆炸。后来，我们又玩一种游戏：先把鞭炮点燃并塞到空的塑料瓶或是易拉罐里面，再把塑料瓶或是易拉罐倒扣在地上，然后马上走开，过了一会儿，只听“砰”的一声响起，塑料瓶或是易拉罐就被炸开了，拿起塑料瓶或是易拉罐对准别人一挤，从塑料瓶或是易拉罐里喷出来的烟会把别人给呛着。还有一种游戏：先把3到8个鞭炮头对头对好，然后另外在拿出了一个鞭炮并点燃，再那个点燃的鞭炮把另外几个鞭炮也点燃，随后立刻跑开，不一会儿，鞭炮就会按照点燃的顺序，挨个响起了，发出“噼里啪啦、噼里啪啦”的声音。

外婆家门口有一个石臼，里面积满了雨水。我和弟弟，阿杰哥哥还有阳阳等好多小朋友，把鞭炮往石臼里扔，但是最好要等火灭了再扔，因为那样成功的可能性大些。鞭炮扔到水里以后，如果冒白泡泡或者冒烟是会炸的，反之或是冒黄泡泡的，就是没用的。如果沉下去以后爆炸的，就是“闷雷”，可以炸鱼，如果浮在水面，就会溅起很大的水花，要及时躲避，已免被淋湿。

到目前为止，我已经知道了5种鞭炮，分别是“急性子”、“慢性子”、“三连炮”、“棉花炮”和“噼里啪啦响”。“急性子”点燃以后，不到5秒钟就会爆炸。“慢性子”点燃以后，要到慢的让人以为坏了才响。“三联炮”比一般的鞭炮长两倍，点燃以后，会连续响三响。“棉花炮”呈圆形，白白的，软软的，用力一扔就会爆炸。“噼里啪啦响”顾名思义，就是点燃后会噼里啪啦响。
