His created understandings of childhood and adulthood allow Holden to cut himself off from the world by covering himself with a protective armor of cynicism. But as the book progresses, Holden’s experiences, particularly his encounters with Mr. Antolini and Phoebe, reveal the shallowness of his conceptions.

One day he heard a sound of whirring wings, and up in the air he saw a flock of birds flying high. Christmas Day falls on the twenty-fifth of December. It is a very happy day for many boys and girls. Before the term ends in some schools, the children act a nativity or “birth” play, showing how Jesus was born in a stable.

On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready.
