The Great Wall of China is called the "Ten thousand Ii Great Wall" in Chinese. In fact, it s more than 6 000 kilometres long. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the dif ferent parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Emperor Qin Shi Huang had all the walls joined up. Thus, the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."

中国的长城

中国的万里长城被称为“万里长城”。事实上，它有6000多公里长。它蜿蜒地从西向东，穿过沙漠，越过高山，穿过山谷，直到最后到达大海。它是世界奇观之一。

长城有二十多个世纪的历史。它的第一部分是在春秋时期建造的。战国时期，有更多的城墙被用来保卫不同王国的边界。正是在秦朝，秦国把帝夫的发福部分统一为一个帝国。为了把敌人赶出他的帝国，秦始皇把所有的城墙连在一起。于是，长城诞生了。

长城的宽度足以让五匹马或十个人并排走。沿着墙的是瞭望塔，士兵们常常在那里守望。当敌人到来时，在塔上点燃了火作为警告。

在古代没有任何现代机器的情况下，很难建造这样一堵墙。所有的工作都是手工完成的。成千上万的人死了，被埋在他们建造的城墙下。长城不仅是由石头和泥土建成的，而且是几百万人的血肉所组成的。

今天，长城不仅对中国人，而且对来自世界各地的人都有兴趣。他们中的许多人都知道中国著名的谚语:“没有到达长城的人不是真正的人。”

The moment I go to high school, I have made up my mind to study hard. It is

known to all that the period of high school is the turning point of people’s

life, which may decide my future career. So I know the importance of striving

for my future. The reason why I study so hard are various. First, I want my

parents to be proud of me. When my mothers’ friends come to visit her, they

always brag about how excellent their children are, but my mother would never

take me as the topic, because she does not want me to have the pressure. I

appreciate what my mother does to me and really want her to be proud of me.

Second, If I enter a good university, I can have the promising future. It is

time for me to return my parents’ love.

一个大学同学，毕业后五年在二十八岁时就任近十万人口县属小镇镇长。三年后升任为该县宣传部长，而后副县长，配有专车和专门的司机。他的政治野心不小，在官场上如鱼得水。有一年回国我去看他，他开口的第一个问题就是;你为什么不回国?中国应该有更适合你的专业的位置和机会。

我想都没有想地答道：为了有尊严地活着。

同学十分不解地看了我一会儿。但他没有继续追问，而是让他的司机随时待命，亲自开车带我去他工作和管辖的地区转转，并开玩笑说：好多年我都不开车了，但是今天，我给你当司机!我明白他的意思今天我是他的贵宾，但经他这么有意一说，也让我意识到他今天在降尊纡贵。司机，在他眼里是低人一等的仆从。

我们每到一处，总是被一群人围着前恭后迎，小心赔笑奉承有加，连到餐馆吃饭都是老板亲自出马，殷勤备至。我跟着他狐假虎威了一回，体验到有如皇帝出游般前呼后拥的至尊至贵，这是我在美国没有的经历。

饭后同学旧话重提，吹捧说我在中国肯定会混得比他好，为什么会有在中国活得没有尊严的想法呢?我没有回答他的问题，而是问他，如果某一天他成为一介平民的话，他还会有这样每到一处的礼遇吗?他说他没有想过自己将来会成为一介平民，但如果是的话，估计不会被人这样奉迎着。这就是了。其实在中国没有必要成为一介平民来体会尊严的差别，只需换个角度，你能不能像尊重你的上级一样来尊重你的司机?他们只不过是职业的不同而已。同学老实承认不能，也突然明白我的意思，感叹道，尽管他在这儿人模人样，但如果去省城或北京的话，肯定也是一条哈巴狗，甚至被人当成流浪狗。

没错，在中国，一个人是否被尊重和被尊重的多少取决于你身上披着的社会身份的大小或财富的多少。

在美国，我是典型的一介平民，尽管操着不太流利而且有口音的英语，以及长着不主流的面孔，但每到一处我很少有不被尊重的感觉，仅有的几次还是来源于自己的同胞和新移民。无论是学习工作场所，还是生活消费场所，无论是锦衣绣服，还是破衣滥衫，我个人的经历还没有被人公开歧视过。但在中国，我却时时处处感到不被尊重和歧视，或因为不太高档的衣着，或因不太主流或优越的口音，或长得不富或不贵的面孔等等。说人家美国人是表里不一的伪君子也好，假仁假义的伪善者也好，但人家至少文明到不会明目张胆地歧视人或轻贱人甚至羞辱人。

我也告诉同学，我每天很骄傲地给自己和家人当司机，有时候也给同事和朋友当司机。工作午餐外出就餐时，经常是老板或老板的老板给我们当司机。我所在的美国的城市市长，甚至多数国务部长、国会议员或州长都是自己开私车上下班。即使雇用司机也会对他们彬彬有礼，因为一方面对人本身的尊重是西方的基本价值，另一方面司机手里握有这些人的一票。

像有权的同学一样，一个有钱的同学也不太明白尊严在中国是个问题。在中国的经济和司法还随处有缝可钻的时候，这个同学凭借在政府部门的特殊关系，在只赚不亏的房地产行业找到了他成为富人的位置;在中国的道德开始堕落到以更新妻子包养二奶为荣的时候，他不仅与时俱进地换了个年轻漂亮的妻子，而且在同学朋友中从来不隐瞒包养的情人。现在他家里雇佣了两个保姆和一个专职司机，这些也是他向人展示他的财产的一部分。总之，他总是踩着了时代的步伐，以至他时常感叹，生为男人，只有生在中国才值得。如此的际遇，尊严在他那儿当然不是问题。

“尊严”的话题被提起也是因为他不理解我为什么不回国，是在一帮老同学聚会上，这个有钱的同学在一家餐馆请客。到了该点菜的时候，有钱的同学一招手，四个服务员同时快步躬身迎上来。那是个特殊的包间，配有四个服务员站在房间四角随时待命。同学嫌他们有碍同学间的私密话题把他们赶到了门外。每次有要求，他只需要一招手或对外高声叫道：服务员，再拿份菜单!服务员，饮料!服务员，点烟!等等。点菜的口气更是铿锵有力。当他再次埋头挥手招人时，没有注意到身后一个服务员手里拿了一杯酒正准备递给他，结果酒杯被打落在地，一些酒洒在他身上。同学大眼一瞪，服务员吓得面如灰色连连道歉。我坐在一旁，津津有味地“欣赏”着同学那高高在上有如指挥千军万马的气势，想象不了这曾经是个见了女生就满脸通红、以至初恋情人被人抢走后无助地失声痛哭的大男孩。金钱，是如此地能把一个懦夫变成强者和尊者。

终于等他点完了菜，我告诉他，在美国读书时，我也曾在餐馆端过盘子洗过碗，可是从来没有人对我大呼小叫过。那时英语很糟，不时会出错拿错了菜，但大多数客人投以理解的一笑礼貌地要求换菜，幽默点的谢谢我让他们尝到了一道新菜。而且如果人家对我的服务满意的话，还会给我额外的小费。同学哽咽着，半天没有说话。我以为他正在为自己刚才的行为失当深感愧意呢。不料他却说，在美国那么不好混啊，为什么不回来?

这次轮到我哽咽了。原来有钱人还在坚持己见，即餐馆服务生比他这个有钱人低微数个等级，以至那么地同情他的老同学居然也做过这类的工作。不仅如此，他还理直气壮地说，我花钱买服务，听我的使唤是他们份内的事!可是，有钱人，你买的是人家的服务，这项服务只包括人家态度和善地帮你点菜上菜收盘子等份内的事，并不包括额外的面对你的傲慢和不尊、轻视甚至羞辱。在这个社会上，无论一个什么样的职位，上至国家主席或总统，下至搬运工清洁工，都是在直接或间接在为别人提供服务。因社会的分工和机会的不均等，以及其它一些因素使得职业存在着高低的区别，其报酬形式已经通过金钱和社会地位表现出来了，但职业的尊严和做人的尊严并没有因此而有区别。

人性的尊严是与生俱来的。在一个正常的社会里，是个人，就应该被尊重。但在中国，尊严是要通过某种外在的东西交换得来的，比如用金钱，或权势或社会地位等等，这是为什么大多数人都踩着别人往上爬，爬到一个等级后就踩着比自己低一等的人搜括着别人的尊严而享受着这种搜括。自古就有“万般皆下品”的说法，“惟有读书高”只不过是读书人的臆想，几千年来，从来是“惟有权钱高”。

本来，贫穷并不必然低贱，低微也不必然没有尊严，富有权势也不是尊严的同义词。这个世上，清贫而有尊严地活着的大有人在。但在中国，贫穷低微却是没有尊严的代名词。经典的“笑贫不笑娼”就出自这个土壤，是对这种钱比尊严更重要的价值观作了最好的阐释。

其实说生活在中国缺少尊严不完全对，缺少尊严的只是普通老百姓，有权有势有钱的人不缺这个。官尊民卑，上尊下卑，富尊贫卑，这就是中国式的尊严。

几十年来，为了倡导高尚的互尊互爱的道德，动员全国人民响应的口号一个接着一个：学雷锋，做好事;五讲四美三热爱;八耻八荣，等等。结果呢，从幼儿园开始喊的口号，还是没能阻挡人们的道德水平越来越低，人活得越来越没有尊严的趋势。我们当官的有钱的带头把“八耻”变成了“八荣”。我们的大款们学习雷锋好榜样，敲锣打鼓地捐款救济穷人灾民，捐得稍有点数目的其大名毫不谦虚地昭示在报刊电台头版头条成了大救星。穷人还没有来得及磕头感恩戴德，几个豆腐渣工程、几个通过广告包装的产品、几个声嘶力竭的演出、几个为人们服务的骗局，把这些捐的钱又源源不断地收回到了大款的口袋里。今年春节，我们的亲民领导们终于发现，我们的人民活得没有尊严，于是一个新口号诞生了：让人民活得有尊严。

领导，人们怎样有尊严得起来?稍微有点良心不太“三热爱”的人们，监狱侍候!而且没有任何正常的司法程序，尽管那些司法本身也不公正。想说不该说的话或上访?知不知道警察叔叔腰里有枪?最不济的还有警棍呢，连只发了一根柴火棒的城管都有权随意打人。不听话的人多了，军队上来了。还要顽固抵抗?坦克机关枪打前锋。死在枪下的都是不法分子，活着就不是好人，死了就更没有尊严了，纪念他们当然是有罪的!不同意拆迁?你家的房子或坟墓比我的钢铁造的推土机厉害?我们要奥运了世博了，外国人要来了，你们——脸上脏兮兮的身上破破烂烂的民工，有碍市容有辱我们的国际形象，得滚出城里回到乡下，等尊贵的外宾走后再回来做又苦又累还脏的活……这些，都是领导们让老百姓活得有尊严所做的努力?!

其实，要让百姓活得有尊严并不难。把是否能当官和当官的前途放在老百姓手上，当官的还敢作威作福随便践踏掌握他仕途的人的尊严?没有终身的官员也没有终身的上下级关系，“上尊下卑”还会有问题?提供一个公平竞争的社会环境和较公正的司法系统，任何人都有通过自身的努力而不是通过权力走向富裕的机会，富人也还会那么耀钱扬威了?

中国人，如果剥去了权势和金钱的外衣，还能剩下什么呢?我们普通老百姓还需要等多久才真的活得有尊严呢?

Nowadays, divorce rate has been rising sharply in China, because most

people think that its better to get divorced than stick to a bad marriage. But

for those couples who have children, they had better think over before getting

divorced. Parents divorce may have some negative effects on their children.

Firstly, the love of father is different from the love of mother. Children need

both of the love. Without each of the love, they may not grow up healthily.

Secondly, in order to raise the family, the single parents have to work harder,

so that they may have less time to accompany with their children. The children

may feel neglected, which may cause mental problems. Besides, if the single

parents get married again, the children may get hurt by calling another person

father or mother. If they cant get along well with each other, the situation

will become even worse. Thus, for the sake of their children, parents are not

supposed to get divorced in a rush. They should think twice.
