Lei Feng (雷锋; Léi Fēng) (December 18,1940 - August 15,1962) was a soldier of the Peoples Liberation Army of the PRC. He was characterized by propaganda as a selfless and modest figure after his death and consequently was an idol to many. Today Lei continues to serve as the idol to elementary school students who commemorate and "learn from" him in everyday life,and has become a resilient cultural icon,with many t-shirts printed with his picture on the front.

Born in Wangcheng,Hunan (near the Town of Leifeng,Changsha,Hunan,named in his honour),Lei joined the Communist youth corps when he was very young. Lei died in 1962 at the age of 22,when a telephone pole,struck by an army truck,killed him,when he was directing the truck in backing up. After Leis death,Mao Zedong began what was to be known as the *"Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" (向雷锋同志学习) Campaign,designed to use Lei as a good example to the Chinese people to be cheerfully selfless and noble in thought.

Since,March 5th has become the official "Learn from Lei Feng Day". This day involves various community and school events where people go clean up parks,schools,and other community locations. Local news on that day usually has footage from these events.

Cultural Importance

Communist Chinas leaders have praised Lei Feng as the personification of altruism,the truly selfless figure. Although the historicity and authenticity of the mans story is under dispute,his cultural importance is ingrained within everyday life in China. The importance of moral character was emphasized heavily during Maos era,but Deng-era reforms have seen a moral erosion where competitiveness in social networks has paved its path. Lei Fengs prominence from school textbooks have declined since the 1970s,although he remains part of the national curriculum and many of his deeds are taught in the elementary school curriculum. The term huo Lei Feng (literally Lei Feng alive) has become a noun (or adjective) for anyone that is seen as selfless,or anyone that goes out of their way to help others.

I have my own room now. It is not big. There is a small blue bed in it. Because I love plants, I grow some sun flowers on the desk. Every time I am tired of doing homework, I will watch it. The forest area and forest coverage rates for each province of China from 1700 to 1949 are es- timated backward by every 50 years. Linking the result with modern National Forest Inventory data, the spatial-temporal dynamics of Chinese forest in recent 300 years (AD 1700–1998) is quantitatively analyzed. The study shows that in recent 300 years, the forest area in current territory of China has declined by 0.95×108 hm2 (or 9.2% of the coverage rate) in total, with a trend of decrease and recovery. Before the 1960s, there was a trend of accelerated de- scending. The forest area was reduced by 1.66×108 hm2 (or 17% of the coverage rate) in 260 years. While after the 1960s, there has been a rapid increase. The forest area increased by 0.7×108 hm2 (or 8% of the coverage rate) in 40 years. The study also shows that there is a significant spatial difference in the dynamics of forest. The amplitudes of increasing and de- creasing in western China are both smaller than the ones in eastern China. During the rapid declining period from 1700 to 1949, the most serious decrease appeared in the Northeast, the Southwest and the Southeast, where the coverage rate in most provinces dropped over 20%. In Heilongjiang Province, the coverage rate dropped by 50%. In Jilin Province, it dropped by 36%. In Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, it dropped by 42%. In Yunnan Prov- ince, it dropped by 35%. Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, is bounded on three sides by mountains. It has a 2500-year history and in ancient times was an important military town. Now Taiyuan is one of Chinas heavy industrial cities and accounts for more than half the national coal mining output.

Taiyuan also has a wealth of tourist attractions and notably among these is the Jinci Temple. This is the citys most attractive temple although the Shuangta Si (Twin-Pagoda Temple) has become a symbol of Taiyuan on account of its unique architecture. Another major attraction is the Tianlong Shan Stone Caves where magnificent sculptures dating from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) may be seen.

The gourmand should be aware that Shanxi noodles are highly reputed all over China, as well as the local vinegar. it was a sun day of the summer holiday. the weather was hot. my little brother and i decided to go to the resrvoir to swim by bike. it took us half an hour when we got there, many people were swimming. the we dived into the water……

about an hour later, suddenly somebody called: “help! help!” we were surprised to see a boy struggling in the deep water. as quickly as possible. we swam towards him and pulled him to the shore. he lost his consciousness. we sent him to the nearest hospital at once luckily, he was saved.
