如果一个人有了知识这样一个概念，并且认识到自己知识贫乏的现状，他就可以去寻求、靠近知识。相反，如果他认为自己什么都懂，他就远离知识，在他自以为前进的时候，走着倒退的路。当我明白了自己读书非常少的时候，我就产生了求学的强烈愿望；当我知道世界上书籍数目如何庞大的时候，我又产生了分辨好坏、选择好书的愿望。

教科书不过是古往今来的各种书籍中一个非常小的部分，你不得不去尊敬它们，但是你不必害怕它们，更不要被它们捆住手脚。为此我已经付出了不少的代价，我没能够考进大学。我并不认为自己不好学。如果我在思考一个问题，长期得不到解答，我就去向古代的智者和当代的求索者求教。为着一个明显的目的，我打开了一本又一本的书。有的书给了我许多启发，有的书也令我失望。即使在那些令我失望的书面前，我还是感觉到有所收获，那就是道路没有走完，还得继续走下去。

书籍默不作声，带着神秘的笑容等待着我们。当你打开任何一本书的时候，马上你就会听见许多声音，美妙的音乐或刺耳的噪声。你可以停留在里面，也可以马上退出来。至于我，即使那本书里有魔鬼在嚎叫，我也要听一听，这是为了辨别小夜曲、牛鸣、狮吼、苍蝇的嗡嗡和魔鬼的歌唱到底有什么样的差别。这些差别也是知识。
