Im Alina Li and Im Ben Hedges, and today well be taking you through some of the most important traditions of Chinese new year and historical background. We will look at some of the legends behind Chinese new year and how to celebrate it. Here in the US and Chinese across the world.

The Chinese have specific way to celebrate their new year. If you walk down the street in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, you see a variety of ancient traditions such as red banners, firecrackers and lion dance performances, streets are filled with lively celebration.

However, legend has said that the new year has not always been a time of festivity. An Asian Chinese story told a chilly start to this festive holiday, it begins with an ancient Chinese beast called Nian.

Every New Year Nian would rise from swelling in the sea to ravage Chinese village in livestock and hurting people. The villages soon found out from a wise gray-haired old man that the only way to scare the beast away was to set off firecrackers and light lamps and to hang red banners on each door. As the story goes, this was the beginning of a tradition that would last thousands of years.

So this story leads to the creation of many of other traditions for celebrating Chinese New Year. lets take a look at some of these traditions.

潮汕地区最早的居民是越族。传说，越族人的脚小趾是“重甲”的（即有两片相叠的趾甲）。到了秦朝以后，来自河南、山西一带的中原人民陆续南迁。他们大多先迁往江浙地区，后经福建辗转迁入潮汕地区。他们带来了先进的生产工具和生产技术，与越族人交流、融合、繁衍生息，使越族人逐渐汉化，形成了潮汕先民。现在，要找到脚小趾“重甲”的人可不是一件容易的事。我的大姑两只脚小趾都“重甲”，我爸爸则是右脚的脚小趾“重甲”。

潮汕方言属于闽南方言，是一种富有地方特色的方言体系。据专家研究，潮汕方言起源于古老的闽越土语。中原人民入潮后，他们带来的中原方言与古闽越土语逐渐融合，经过长期的历史演变，潮汕方言逐渐形成，成为独立的次方言。潮汕方言古朴典雅，它保留了许多中国古语。郭沫若说：“潮州话是中国古语保留得最多的一种方言，和现行的标准语似乎也是距离得最远的一种。”比如，古字中有许多在“不”字下面加个字，用来表示相反的意思。现代汉字里只剩下“歪”“甭”“孬”三个字；而潮汕就有“不会”，“不是”，“不怕”等字。这些字写出来，观其形，就可以知道它的意思了。潮汕话也保留了一些古词。如：把炒菜的锅叫“鼎”，把粥叫“糜”，这正是两千年前的用法。潮汕人称厕所为“东司”，它的来源是因为唐代厕所大多建在东侧。如此说来，这个潮汕人认为很“土”的词，倒有些古雅了。

潮汕方言也引进了一些外来词汇。比如，有些人称“卡车”为罗离”（“rolly”），称“小面包”为“罗的”（“roti”），称“拐杖”为“动角”（马来语）等。这些外来语的应用，与潮汕地区靠近东南亚，较早开埠等因素是有很大关系的。潮汕话中也有一些避讳。在我爸爸的出生地——东墩，聚居着“张”“黄”两个姓氏的人。那里张姓的人说纸的时候不说“一张纸”，他们说“一合纸”。

潮汕方言是潮汕族群的纽带，具有巨大的凝聚力。无论走到哪里，听到潮汕话，都会感到无比亲切。潮汕的美食是最负盛名的。潮汕地区有“美食之乡”的美称。潮汕地区濒临海洋，海鲜自是必不可少的美味。血蚌就是一种具有地方特色的食品。每逢过年，家家户户都会买一些血蚌。家里人煮一锅开水，把血蚌放进去闷一会儿，大约一分钟后就可以取出来吃了。掰开蚌壳，会看到带着血的蚌肉，吃起来鲜美却不带腥味。潮汕小吃也是非常有特色的。出名的小吃有炒糕粿、蚝烙、鲎粿等，还有一些专门做供品的粿品，如红桃粿、鼠粬粿等。潮汕小吃注重色香味形名俱美，做工精细，让人流连忘返。潮汕工夫茶名扬海内外。工夫茶有其独特的文化内涵——和、爱、精、洁、思。这五个字的深刻涵养，正体现了潮汕文化儒雅的“和”的思想。喝茶早已成为潮汕人生活中不可缺少的部分。饭后喝茶，闲聊喝茶，茶几乎陪伴着潮汕人的每时每刻。就连学校的办公室里，老师们在课间也会抽空喝上一杯茶。潮汕的风俗习惯也有其特有之处。海洋文化带来的传统习俗，与中原习俗相结合，形成了潮汕地区独有的人文风情。潮汕地区最具特色的节日要数“出花园”了。每年农历七月初七，家里十五虚岁的孩子就要举行“出花园”的成人仪式。这一天在潮汕民俗里被称为“公婆母生”。

公婆母是一个可以保佑孩子顺利成人的守护神。出花园要拜公婆母，一方面答谢神恩，一方面是祈求孩子成人后平安大吉。这一天，十五虚岁的孩子要换上全身新衣服，父母在孩子的床头摆上三牲（鸡、猪肉、鱼）和供品，跪拜公婆母神。父母用石榴花蘸水，把水洒在孩子身上。这一天里，孩子照例是不可以出门的，这一年里不可以去陌生地方，也不要参加婚丧礼仪。潮汕地区的人们供养着许多神明。地主爷是几乎家家户户都供奉着的。他是一位可以保护家宅平安的土地神。每逢农历初一、十五，人们就会供拜地主爷。大峰祖师则是一位行善积德的得道高僧。宋朝年间，他在我外公的出生地——和平镇救死扶伤，施医赠药，为当地人民做了许多好事，被尊为潮汕慈善事业的开山祖。由于潮汕地区濒临海洋，海神对于潮汕人民来说，是非常重要的。妈祖是潮汕地区人人供奉的海上女神。凡是有港口的地方就有妈祖庙，妈屿岛有天后宫，小公园有老妈宫，樟林古港有天后宫……清朝末年，许多潮汕人迫于生计，乘着红头船背井离乡去“过番”（到东南亚一带求生），都会在港口的天后宫里拜过妈祖再走。妈祖救助海上灾难的故事传遍了潮汕地区，也伴随着下南洋的人的足迹传遍了整个世界。

游神是潮汕地区一项隆重的民俗活动，俗称“营老爷”（即抬着神像巡游），抬着的神像一般是“关帝君”等。各个村子的规模、时间都各不相同。记得小时侯，每年农历正月廿七，我都会去外婆的出生地——芦溪看游神，如今长大了，倒没机会去了。

我的家乡——潮汕地区有着道不尽的独特文化，她以她自身的民俗风情，秉承着“海纳百川，自强不息”的精神，正向全世界展示着她独特的魅力。

我的家乡高州是一个历史悠久的小城，那还有许多名胜古迹，其中，笔架山是我最喜欢的一处景物。

笔架山位于广东省高州市城南郊外3公里，山地面积为4·5平方公里，有左、中、右三峰，山峰一线并列，形似笔架，因而得名。

笔架山明清时期就成为了“高凉八景”之一。他虽然不是很高，但是它非常美丽。山上的树木郁郁葱葱，远看像树的海洋。从山脚到山顶的石梯路，可以让游客到山顶观赏风景。路口，边还有凉亭可供累的游客休息。是人们旅游的好去处。

历代达官贵人、骚人墨客题咏颇多，诸如明代高州府张邦伊，清山高中知府蒋应秦、陈淮。茂名知县钱以垲和举人内中书黄大鹏均有题咏。刻在石碑上供游客观赏。

The main subjects I studied at school included Chinese, maths, English, physics, chemistry and computer.I have many haobbis ,for example, I like English and computer best and I am very good at them. Last year I won a prize in the school computer competition. In my spare time I enjoy listening to popular music and collecting stamps. My favorite sports are swimming in summer and skating in winter. That is me ,a lovely girl.

My beautiful home, where its spring scenic.

Spring, my hometown, green grass and flowers are in bloom. Out of the tree branches, birds singing in the merry. Looking around is the continuous mountains, mountains and rolling hillsides in the spring, as if a domesticated hen the carpet, until the sky. Graceful flowers blossoming in a dotted mountains, attract colorful butterflies; in the depths of the mountain is the terraced rows of shapes, by definition, is the same as the stairs rice; a winding path to article rice into the ever-changing shape, some like crescent, and some, like boats, some as sickle ... ... in the spring, when seedling growth, fresh green color of the home that add still more beautiful.

Summer, sun spit fire, but the hills in the home full of trees, in the shade of the shelter, the very cool; also known bird burst into song. Kind of ripe watermelon in the mountains, home of the watermelon usually round and bright, and that the air moon, as round; cut, I saw a bright red flesh, sweet and delicious; black seeds, like the eyes of swarthy .

Autumn is a golden rice, breeze, rice started singing a harmony of the song, when hard-working farmers are harvesting rice; rice harvest of the cheerful sound of voices and interwoven success of the harvest of the symphony .

Winter, although the trees have been dying, but is everywhere in the roadside grass and wild flowers, which stand at attention in the cold. They tell you: "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?"

This is my beautiful hometown, my favorite home.

春天又来了，柳树再次发芽了。每当我见到柳树，20年前的童年生活就又会清晰的浮现在我眼前。

回到故乡，走在儿时嬉戏的小路上，回想起二十年前的早上，阳光照着大地，春风吹动柳枝，柳条儿被春风一吹，就软了，长出了一个个可爱的小绿苞。我可高兴了，拿着又长又软又新鲜的柳条，向小朋友们喊：“编柳帽了，大家快来呀!”

柳帽非常好编，先把柳条儿从树上扯下来，再按妈妈给妹妹编辫子的方法，把柳条编到一定长度，湾成一个圈，用线把两端系起来，柳帽就OK了。我们一个个戴着自己亲手编的柳帽，可神气了呢!

小时候我爱吹柳哨，就死缠着姥爷，让他给我做柳哨。姥爷服了我，就用长了老茧的大手，做了很多柳哨，我把哨发给了小朋友们，比谁吹得响。当然，我把最响的留给了自己，所以每次第一都是非我莫属!

如果夏天的夜晚我和几个同性朋友，在有着月光灯的路上摸路，慢慢前进。到了姥爷家，我们就又缠着姥爷讲故事。明月、柳树和我们，津津有味的听着姥爷讲的新鲜趣闻和解放初期的战斗故事，小朋友们那欢乐的笑脸，我一生难忘!

二十年后的今天，虽然不能常回故乡，不能常常看到故乡的明月、柳树了，但是我相信，我不会忘记他们和家乡。如果再加一个时间的话，我希望是永远，不是永远不忘记家乡，而是永远住在家乡，永远看着家乡的明月，永远躺在那棵依依多情的柳树下。
