Book Review: “Camille”

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800s, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armands father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armands reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumass last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

Last morning, when tiding my bookshelf, I took this book out of the shelf, and a dried flower flew away from the book. It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins. a dried flower flew away from the book. It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins. I held it against the morning light and blew on it. The soft breeze carried it away. Camille is just like the camellia, she could never escape from the destiny of withering. But it wasn’t her fault; it’s because of the evil of Capitalism and the hideousness of that society.

Suddenly, I remembered a saying: “Women are like the flowers”. Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers; their delicate beauty makes people feel they are the miracle of life. However, even the God envies their beauty. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. As we are normal persons, even we can see the hideousness of humanity that results in their fate of withering, we can at most ask quietly in our hearts: Where have those beautiful flowers gone? Where have they gone?

Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.

In “Pride and Prejudice”, the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.

In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?

Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.

Recently I have read a famous Chinese classical novel-The romance of the Three Kingdoms and I felt benefit a lot. Let me tell you about my feelings.

The romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the four great Chinese master pieces. It was written by Luo Guanzhong, who was born in 1330. It describes nearly 200 characters and tells the story from the late Eastern Han dynasty to the unified of Jin dynasty.

The minute I started to read this book, I was deeply impressed by the sentence at the beginning of the novel: "The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide." It is so philosophical. It reflected the main history of the Three Kingdoms, from the rebellion of the Yellow Turbans to the replacement of the division of the country into Three Kingdoms (Wei, Shu and Wu) by the Jin Dynasty. In these periods, it showed a lot of heroic deeds, and what the heroes did had made a brilliant history. In this novel, the hero I admire mostly is Guan Yu, the general of Shu.

"A man of enormous height, nine spans tall, with a two-foot-long beard flowing from his rich, ruddy cheeks. He had glistening lips, eyes sweeping sharply back like those of the crimson-faced phoenix, and brows like nestling silkworms. His stature was imposing, his bearing awesome." This is Guan Yus appearance. He was called as hero not only because of his handsome looking, but because of his precious characters.

He is the embodiment of loyalty, wisdom and bravery. Once, when Guan Yu was having a battle with Cao Cao (the Master of Wei), he lost connection with Liu Bei(the Master of Shu), and finally he had to surrender because Liu Beis family was with him. Cao Cao appreciated Guan Yus talents, he provided a fabulous palace and lots of money to Guan Yu. Despite Guan Yu was taken good care of in the Cao Cao’s camp, but his heart was still with the Liu Bei’s camp. He had never given up looking for his master. As soon as he got the news of Liu Bei, Guan Yu had forced five passes and slew six captains, finally he found his master. His behavior showed not only his loyalty to his master but also his bravery.

Admittedly, Guan Yus death is also a lamentable. Because of his complacency, he looked down on the army of Wu, lost Jingzhou (an important City), finally, he flopped, and was killed by his personal enemy.

With his personal likes and dislikes, regardless of the consequences, it led to the disruption of the alliance between Wu and Shu, the whole situation was changed greatly.

Guan Yu’s lesson tells us: No matter how talented you are, you’d better remain modest and be humble.

This is a great novel that depicts the countless legendary stories. We can learn not only the characters of the heroes, but also the political and military strategies. It is a best way to experience the profound Chinese ancient culture. Tiancheng(Daniel)Dai

To Regain the Nature of Goodness

—— Review of ‘Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century.

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.

The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I dont think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on peoples honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.

Francis Bacon said in his essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.

That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those vermin-to-be to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness.

A Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens’s masterpieces; the story is an exposure of the contradiction before France Revolution-the appealing of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” by France lower class.

The main clue of the novel is based on the terrible experience of Dr. Manette, the plot is very complex, attracting, and exciting. Lying at the heart of which we can see the themes from different people.

Sydney Carton

When I read the chapter pertaining to interrogation on Charles Darney, intuition tells that the lawyer assistant who feels at ease with his eyes fixed on the ceiling must be a very special man, which turned out to be right when I finished the whole book. He seems indifferent about everything, even his love. He is brilliant but he thinks otherwise, or rather, he thinks he is inferior to others. Even his master thinks that if he worried about this or that, he would make a great success. Feeling of humbleness is the fatal point leading the loss of his beloved one. If Lucie Manette lives with him, he thinks, she would sustain much hardship. At the end of the story, he sacrifices his life for his love willingly.

Many people say that love is selfish and egocentric, but the temperament of Sydney Carton tells us that love can be sublime and pure. Through this, Dickens tells us loving someone doesn’t mean you should live together with him or her. You can help your beloved one silently, even sacrifice for love. This is universal fraternity, I think, which is the sublimation of normal love. And also, Dickens may indicate that true love really exists, regardless of the situation is full of commotion or not.

Charles Darney

He’s born at a family of royal lineage-the son of Marquis. Regret and abomination fill in his mind for the cruelty and the crime his family have done to the poor. He determines to quit the right of inheritance of his family and moves to England to acting as a French teacher. When he comes back to France, his notorious and sadistic uncle who holds the succession of the family doesn’t welcome him. His uncle is doomed to death because of his cruelty. When he returns to England, he proposes marriage to Lucie Manette. He knows his proposal may not be accepted by Dr.Manette, for he is the son of the enemy of Dr.Manette. After the France Revolution breaks out, he returns to France again to save a servant. But unfortunately, he’s cast into prison.

Lucie Manette

She goes to France with Jarvis Lorry to take her father back, she shows great sympathy to Sydney Carton, and she prayed his husband would get an early deliverance from captivity.

She is a kind-hearted lady made of love and sympathy; she is also the incarnation of elegance.

Dr.Manette

As a victim of the gloom society, he lives a miserable and contradictory life. After releasing from prison, the only thing he does is making shoes, which become worse when he comes across a harsh situation. He loves his daughter just as she does to him, even when he knows that Charles Darney is the son of his enemy, he allow the proposal. And when he notices his daughter was totally down to know the fact that her husband was put into prison, he promise to her that he will rescue him out. He spares no effects to do that, in vain, though.

From this person, Dickens may tells that love between the lower-class family members are as pure as crystal.

Jarvis Lorry

An elderly manager at Tellsons Bank and a dear friend of Dr. Manette. He is very loyal to Dr. Manette. He accompanies them all the time without considering his own life.

Couple Defarge

They’re the leader of the revolution. Ernest Defarge, to some extent, is a good man. He was the servant of Dr.Manette, he provides accommodation for him. But his wife, Madame Defarge, is really a wicked woman. She knits all the time, she wants to kill all the people who lead a richer or happier life just out of envying and revenge. The result turns out to be dramatic: she’s killed by herself as a consequence that the gun goes off by accident.

Resurrection maybe is the main theme in the novel. Dickens here implied that he doesn’t agree the upper class treat the poor badly, meanwhile, he doesn’t agree the lower-class to overthrow the upper class. He hopes that they can live in harmony with each other. Underneath the lines, Dickens wants his readers to be careful that the same sort of revolution that so damaged France wont happen in Britain, which is shown to be nearly as unjust as France. But his warning is addressed not to the British lower classes, but to the aristocracy. He repeatedly uses the metaphor of sowing and reaping; if the aristocracy continues to plant the seeds of a revolution through behaving unjustly, they can be certain of harvesting that revolution in time. The lower classes do not have any agency in this metaphor: they simply react to the behavior of the aristocracy. In this sense it can be said that while Dickens sympathizes with the poor, he identifies with the rich: they are the books audience, its "us" rather than its "them". Crush humanity out of shape once more, under similar hammers, and it will twist itself into the same tortured forms. Sow the same seed of rapacious license and oppression over again and it will surely yield the same fruit according to its kind.

These days Ive just finished the novel Uncle Toms Cabin that left a really deep impression on me and we can see.

It is a book written in 1852 in response to the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, Uncle Toms Cabin has been considered as the most influential anti-slavery novel in that period and described by Stowe herself as a “series of sketches” describing the human cruelty of slavery, opens with a description of Arthur Shelbys Kentucky plantation during the antebellum period.

There are several impressive characters in this novel, George who is clever and brave;Harry, a beautiful and talented child who sings dances and mimes;Mrs. Shelby, a very religious woman;Sambo and Qimbo and so on. The major character Uncle Tom who was the most impressive in this novel was a devout Christian. He endured the miserable fate bravely and aroused the whites sympathy for slaves with his Christs sacrifice and the tolerance of returning good for evil. This novel focuses on the distinctive personalities of Uncle Tom deeply influenced by Christianity and the important role Uncle Toms Cabin playing on abolition; and the Significance of “Uncle Tom” to the harmonious worlds development, and the effect on modern people.

In the book, at the beginning, the author presents us a very beautiful image of a rather harmonious family who live a happy life. However, that beautiful image couldnt last long, the darkness came soon. The master of this happy family, Uncle Tom was arranged into a difficult situation. As Shelby, the not cruel master, he has incurred serious debts- prompting him sell some slaves to avoid financial ruin, so Uncle Tom, Shelbys loyal servant since childhood was sold to Mr. Haley, the slave trader. Uncle Tom remained loyal to his master, despite his betrayal and the risk of death at the cruel hands of a new master. The slaves at the plantation were very mournful, but Tom remained placid and tried to read his Bible for fort. On the steamboat to New Orleans, where Tom was to be sold, Tom befriended an angelic little girl, “Little Eva” St. Clare. Uncle Tom saved the five-year-old beauty from drowning, and she convinced her father to buy Tom for her own family. In her family, Tom enjoye.

d his life because of the girls love; Toms contentment does not last, however, because Eva soon falls ill. Dying, Eva asked Mr. St. Clare to free Tom after her death. But Mr. St. Clare is so sad by her death that he never legally freed Tom before he himself was killed trying to mediate a barroom scuffle. Mrs. St. Clare sold the slaves to settle her husbands debts and Tom was sold to Simon Legree who was so violent that beat his slaves brutally. At last, when Mr. Shelby, finally found Uncle Tom, he was almost died. After Tom was dead and buried, Shelby went back and freed his slaves.

As we all can see that Uncle Toms Cabin was an anti-slavery novel and it was even considered as one factor that caused the Civil War. In the novel, the slaves were sold from one place to another frequently, and their fate was tragic, with no exception- just like Uncle Tom, no matter he was under the control of kind masters or evil masters, he cant escape the misfortune of being sold from one master to another. We cant see any human right of them, so terrible.

As someone said, with more people realizing the inhumanity of slavery in the 19th century, slavery became one of the most important issues and it became more violent year by year in American society. However, slavery was not abolished irrevocably until ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865, following the Civil War. After the passage of Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this novel Uncle Toms Cabin which publicized the evil of slavery to a wide audience.

Now we are in the 21st century, we may never e across such kind of thing. However, this book can always remind of us that there ever has existed this evil and we cant let it happen again. And “equality” 、“human right ” cant just be a slogan, we should make it e true really and always.

“Animals deserve our kindness, sympathy and understanding,” that is what Anna Sewell-the author of Black Beauty-wanted to convince her readers。 Thanks to Sewell, I now think about the animal-human relationship from both the human and the animal’s point of view。

The inspiration for Anna Sewell’s novel was drawn from her own relationship with horses。 Anna Sewell was born on March 20th, 1820 in Norfolk, England and was crippled while still very young。 Due to her disability, she relied on horse-drawn carriages and grew to love horses as a result。 She also became appalled by the careless and cruel treatment horses often received from humans and determined to write a book。。 In the second year of work on the book, she was told that she had only eighteen months to live, but she persevered in order “to induce kindness, sympathy and an understanding [of the ] treatment of horses。” Five years later, she was still working on Black Beauty, her only book。 Unfortunately, Sewell died a few months after publication and never learned of the book’s huge success。 Black Beauty formed an impassioned plea for animal rights at a time when such a notion had been dismissed as ridiculous。

The novel portrayed the real condition of working horses living in Britain during the Victorian Era。 In that time period, the wealthy thought that their horses were treated well because they never stepped into the stable。 In order to call people’s attention to horses’ hard life, Sewell tells the story through the first-person narrative voice of a horse。 This innovative personification of an animal made the book a real success。 Readers heard the stories straight from the horse’s mouth, literally, as an animal spoke of extremes of joy and suffering。 People were shocked by the truth exposed by the novel and changed their attitudes towards animals。

Sewell formed the novel with three kinds of characters: Black Beauty, Ginger and other farm animals。 Through their different experiences, I saw similarly painful lives led by the animals。 This method made the earnest appeal for animal rights become more and more persuasive。

As a domestic animal, Black Beauty was continuously sold from one family to another。 Over the years Beauty enjoyed good masters but also endured mean ones。 Sometimes, he was cared for and at other times tortured。 In the end, everything turns out all right in a story that is so tender and yet meaningful。 His story was so vivid that caught the readers’ heart。 The novel brought people laughter and tears and also enlightened them to understand animals at the same time。

Animals cannot speak so understanding is significant to them。 Once, for example, Beauty was drawing the carriage to a wooden bridge。 The bridge was flooded out in the river and John, the groom, was not aware that it was cracked。 But the quickly realized that something was wrong because of Beauty’s abnormal behavior。 Momentarily, a man shouted to them, “Stop! Stop!…The bridge is broken in the middle。 If you come across, you’ll fall in the river!” Beauty had saved John。 However, if John had not tried to understand what Beauty wanted to tell him, there would definitely have been an accident。 I learnt from the story that understanding animals is not only essential to them but is also beneficial to us ourselves。

Today I have read Helen Keller’s “Three Days to See”.I have read this article in the chinese teaching material when I was in high school. This article impressed me.It told me how lucky we are.We should aprrecaite that we are healthy.Healthiness is riches. So today I read this article again.Whenever I read this article, compare with Helen Keller,I think we should treasure our life, god has given us sight so we can see a lot of good things,so we can know how beautiful this world is,so we can know how wonderful we can live in our coloreful life.

Helen Keller, blind and deaf from infancy.Stricken with a serious illness at the age of nineteen months,Keller survived from the illness but was left permanently unable to see and hear.In this article, three day of sight,we can see,how precious it was as for Helen Keller. What would you want to look at if you had only three days of sight?Helen gives her answer in this famous essay.I always think that people can realize the importance of the sight and sound only after they have personally expericenced the dark and silence life.Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight, silence would teach him the joys of sound.

This short story tell people how Keller take advantage of having the privileges to see, hear, and speak. Some people, unfortunately, are blind, deaf, and mute. These unfortunate people take more time to appreciate life and they are always waiting for the miracle all their life. The author,Helen Keller,is one of such person who is blind, deaf, and mute. She strongly believes that people, who are fortunate to have such senses, take life for granted. She also strongly believes these people should live in the fullest, meaning, accomplish lifes when they can do this today,do not leave it for tomorrow.

One can die at any moment,no matter how healthy or in what physical shape he is.As for this,Helen came across many instances. She had asked her friend what she had seen after taking a walk through the woods, and her friend replied,“Nothing in particular.” Her friend gave she this answer, because her friend become accustomed to see the routine of their surroundings, and her eyes only can be attracted by startling and spectacular things.I think if we only have sight for 3 days we will give another answer.

I appreciate Hellen Keller. Her life is a miracle, she stronly face the difficulties which can detroy one’s mind of living. Her life is a tragedy, but the world in her heart is full of love. Her spirit will encourage all of us,forever.

Joy depicts the crisis of faith that overes Rabbi Banish of Komarov, who, having buried his four sons and two daughters. Only through the mercy of the God he has denied, manifest in a radiant vision of the dead Rebecca, his beloved youngest daughter, is the rabbi’s belief restored. The sense of wonder and the touch of heavenly joy that linger after the vision dissolves convince Rabbi Banish of the folly of judging God’s actions by human standards. The rabbi has interpreted the apparent tragedy of his children’s premature deaths as evidence of God’s alienation, forgetting that God is by definition inscrutable. That God’s purpose transcends man’s ability to prehend it is made clear to the expiring rabbi when the family dead approach his deathbed with arms outstretched to enfold him among them. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven to which a loving God has called them; and their deaths have evidenced not God’s wrath but his grace.

A version of Rabbi Banish’s deathbed revelation appears to Rabbi Nechemia in Something Is There. At twenty-seven he is already racked by the doubts that torment Rabbi Banish. So shaken is his belief in God that he deserts his rabbinical post in provincial Bechev for the flesh-posts of Warsaw. Although the prostitutes, unclean food, and shady business dealings which he witnesses there hold no attraction for the erstwhile rabbi, they intensify his revulsion from the world created by God and therefore his alienation from God himself. Unlike Rabbi Bainish, whose intimations of immortality and consequent rededication to God precede his radiant deathbed vision, Rabbi Nechemia cannot allay his doubts until the very moment of death, when a light he never knew was there flickered in hid brain.

While his dying words—something is there—resolve his crisis of faith, they e too late to affect the spiritual renewal attained by Rabbi Banish. No explicit promise of immortality, let along of salvation, attends Rabbi Nechemia’s vision. Perhaps grace is accorded Rabbi Banish because his doubt is triggered by devastating personal losses, and withheld from Rabbi Nechemia because his despair is the bitter fruit of idle speculation about the unknown. Whatever the reason, relatively few of Singer’s characters are granted at the moment of death the transcendent vision of unity between man and God that appears to Rabbi Banish in Joy. For the fortunate few, release from time into eternity is affected by a divine visitation which obliterates distinctions between past and present, living and dead.

These kinds of characters are lost in their world because of the seducement of the material world. They doubt their formal faith and gradually give up what they believed. But after they have experienced so much hardship, they realize that they cannot adapt to the life of the outer world so they regress to the former life with formal faith. They realize the importance of God and they begin to think seriously about the relationship between man and God. At last they find their right way of their life.
