春节是中国民间最隆重最富有特色的传统节日，相传人们之所以把这个节日叫春节还来源于万年历法。其实，我国在远古时期就有年的概念。“年”的甲骨文写法为上面部分为“禾”字，下面部分为“人”字。金文的“年”字与甲骨文相同。而现在已发掘出来的甲骨文中的“禾”字，几乎都是看上去沉甸甸地被压弯了腰，可见它象征着取得谷物生产的大丰收。

“年”字下面的“人”字又作何解释呢？从甲骨文看，“年”字好象是人头上顶着沉甸甸的谷子的样子。相传，远古时期虽知一年有四季，但节令不准。有个名叫万年的人便想重新计算调整，于是，苦思冥想好的计时方法。

一日，上山砍柴坐在树荫下休息时，日光下树影的移动使他受了启发而设计了用测日影计天时的晷仪，准确地测定一天的时间；后来，他又受山崖上的滴泉的启发动手做了一个五层漏壶来计算时间。就这样经过反复推演，万年发现四季轮回一次需要间隔三百六十多天，天时的长短会重复一遍。国君祖乙知道此事后大喜，在天坛前修建日月阁、筑起日晷台和漏壶亭希望万年能测准日月规律和准确的晨夕时间。几十年过去了，一次，祖乙登上日月坛时看见坛边的石壁上刻着一首诗：日出日落三百六，周而复始从头来；草木枯荣分四时，一岁月有十二圆。知道万年创建历法已成，亲自登上日月阁看望万年。此时，已经满面银髯的万年指着天象，对祖乙说：“现在正是十二个月满，旧岁已完，新岁复始，祈请国君定个节吧。”祖乙说：“就把岁首叫春节吧。”这样就有了过大年。祖乙为纪念万年的功绩，便将太阳历命名为“万年历”，并封万年为日月寿星。据说，现在人们在春节时所挂的寿星图就是这位德高望重的万年。

传统意义上的春节，是从腊月初八的腊祭或腊月廿三、廿四的祭灶，直到正月十五日上元节结束，部分地方也会把整个正月纳入春节春节的范围。每年从农历腊月二十三日起到年三十，民间把这段时间叫做“扫尘日”，所以有民谚：腊月二十四，掸尘扫房子。因“尘”与“陈”谐音，新年扫尘有“除陈布新”的涵义，其用意是要把一切“穷运”、“晦气”统统扫出门。据《吕氏春秋》记载，我国在尧舜时代就有春节扫尘的风俗。过大年的中心日子是除夕和正月初一，因为这一天是新一年的头一天，春季的头一天，正月的头一天，所以称为“三元”；因为这一天还是岁之朝，月之朝，日之朝，所以又称“三朝”；又因为它是第一个朔日，所以又称“元朔”。人们会在正月初一拜大年，但从正月初一至初五，多数家庭均不接待妇女，谓之“忌门”。仅限于男子外出拜年，妇女则须等到正月初六以后才能外出走访。拜年之风，汉代已有。唐宋之后十分盛行，有些不必亲身前往的，可用名帖投贺。
