这本书主要讲述了主人公保尔出生于一个贫苦的铁路工人家庭，从小就富有强烈的抗争意识。在地下党员朱赫来的带领下他逐渐走上了革命的道路，他先是因奋不顾身搭救朱赫来而被捕，出狱后上前线奋勇作战，屡立战功，最后因右眼失明而被迫停止工作，又因全身瘫痪而卧床不起，但是保尔不畏病魔的摧残又开始文学创作，终于拿起了新的武器，重返战斗队伍，实现了他的梦想，开始了新的生活。
