secondly , my personality has been changed a lot during my college life. when i was a senior high student all i had to do is study but since i came to tongji university i joined many communities like the english corner, the climbing club, the drama club. my life became very interesting and since these communities are organized by students , we communicated a lot and had fun together , besides i learned how to communicate an cooperate with others. this helps me in my study. when i do team work with my fellow students , i know how to do to be in a team.

Li Ling was a great general during the time of emperor Han Wu-di (hàn wǔ dì汉武帝). He was a very good fighter, and he won every battle.

One time, however, Li Lings troops were so hopelessly outnumbered by the Huns that although they fought bravely, the whole army was soon taken captive.

Li Ling shamefully surrendered for the moment, planning to wait for an opportunity to strike back.

But when news of the surrender reached the capital, the emperors jealous ministers began to degrade Li Ling in front of the emperor.

What he heard made the emperor so angry that he had Li Lings wife and mother put to death.

Ze-ma Chian, who had always respected Li Ling, believed that he wouldnt surrender without a reason, and urged the emperor not to believe rumors.

Sz-ma Chian then wrote a long letter to a friend, saying, "I am now in the middle of writing a history book. If I die, it will be as if one ox in a group on nine were to lose a single hair. I am willing to withstand punishment in order to complete this book." Sz-ma Chian finally did finish his book - the very famous Shr-Ji.

This time, the emperor grew angry at Sz-ma Chian, and locking him up, punished him severely.

有一次，虽然李陵的军队奋勇杀敌，因为兵力不足而战败投降。

司马迁一直很敬重李陵，他不信李陵会无缘无故投降，便谏言皇上不要听信谣言。

At the end of the Qin Dynasty(221-206 B.C.) the State of Chu and the State of Han fought for control for the country. Xiang Yu, the king of Chu, was besieged（包围） at a place called Gaixia by the Han army led by Liu Bang. Xiang Yu was in a desperate situation, with little food and only a few soliders. At night, the surrounding Han troops started to sing Chu folk songs. Xiang Yu was very surprised at this, and said:"Has Liu Bang occupied the whole of Chu? How can he have drafted so many Chu people into his army?" Then he fled together with the remainder of his forces.

This idiom is used metaphorically to mean to be in a helpless and critical situation, surrounded by the enemy on all sides.

以后人们就用“四面楚歌”这个词，形容人们遭受各方面攻击或逼迫，而陷于孤立窘迫的境地。凡是陷于此种境地者，其命运往往是很悲惨的。例如某人因经常与坏人为伍，不事生产，游手好闲，但后来却被那些坏人逼迫得无以为生，而求助于别人时，别人又因他平日行为太坏，绝不同情理睬，这人所处的境地便是“四面楚歌”。

Dear Tom,

Im just writing to let you know that were all well, and I hope you are,

too. Unfortunately, Ive got some rather bad news for you: Im afraid I made a

bit of a mess of Johns car. Anyway, heres what happened.

We were on our way to Carols after a long party, and I suppose it must

have been about eleven o’clock. Well, the last few miles back home were really

dark and deserted. I now realize I was probably going a bit too fast for a

country lane because, although the road was fairly straight, I drove up onto the

curb and went into a tree.

Of course, John was absolutely furious and started shouting at me and

cursing. After we d argued for a few moments, we decided to look at the damage,

and he calmed down a bit. Well, we found we could move the car, but the wing was

caught on the wheel, so we couldnt drive it. I tried to pull the wing clear,

but I didnt succeed.

Anyway, John went off to phone for a breakdown lorry, but while he was

away, I had another go at the wing and this time succeeded in pulling it right

off. I threw it onto the back seat, and by that time John got back and we were

ready to go?so we didnt need the breakdown lorry at all. John has more or less

forgiven me now, but he was very angry with me for a few days. I suppose I was a

bit careless.

Well, thats all for now. Next time I write I hope Ill have better news

for you.

买椟还珠

A man from the state of Chu wanted to sell a precious pearl in the state of

Zheng. He made a casket(小箱，棺材) for the pearl out of the wood from a magnolia(木兰)

tree, which he fumigated(熏制) with spices. He studded the casket with pearls and

jade, ornamented it with red gems and decorated it with kingfisher(翠鸟) feathers.

A man of the state of Zheng bought the casket and gave him back the pearl.

Too luxuriant(丰富的，奢华的) decoration usually supersedes(取代) what really

counts. This man from Chu certainly knew how to sell a casket but he was no good

at selling his pearl. And the man of Zheng didnt know which is really

valuable.
