Dear James, In today’s newspaper, I read about the recent events in your town and I am writing to extend my deepest condolences.

It broke my heart to see all those pictures of those whose homes have been destroyed in the tragic hurricane. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a little girl crying on the roof of her house asking for help. I am really worried about you and your family, and all your friends there. I am crossing my fingers for you now in hopes that you are all safe and sound.

I can only imagine how difficult this time must be for you, and I want to extend to you my unwavering support. Our government and many nongovernmental organizations are initiating various campaigns to urge people to donate money and necessary things to send to America. I donated all my allowance that I have been saving for years.

I feel extremely sorry for this tragedy, and I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Please pass my concern on to your parents.

International Workers Day(国际劳动节) is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labor movement. International Workers Day commonly sees organized street demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of working people and their labor unions throughout Europe and most of the rest of the world — though, as noted below, not in either the United States or Canada. More radical groups such as communists and anarchists are also given to widespread street protest on this day as well.

International Workers Day was originally the commemoration of the Chicago riots(暴乱)of 1886: in 1889, the first congress of the Second International(第二国际), meeting in Paris for the centenial of the French Revolution(法国大革命) and the Exposition Universelle (1889), following a proposal by Raymond Lavigne, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago riot. These were so successful that International Workers Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the Internationals second congress in 1891. The May Day Riots of 1894 and May Day Riots of 1919 occurred subsequently.

In 1904, the International Socialist Conference meeting in Amsterdam(阿姆斯特丹) called on "all Social-Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on May First for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace." As the most effective way of demonstrating was by striking, the congress made it "mandatory upon the proletarian organizations of all countries to stop work on May 1, wherever it is

possible without injury to the workers."

International Workers Day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist, and anarchist groups. In some circles, bonfires are lit in commemoration of the Haymarket Riot, usually right as the first day of May begins.

Due to its status as a celebration of the efforts of workers and the socialist movement, International Workers Day is an important official holiday in Communist countries such as the Peoples Republic of China, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union(前苏联) . International Workers Day celebrations typically feature elaborate popular and military parades in these countries.

In countries other than the United States and Canada, resident working classes fought hard to make International Workers Day an official holiday[citation needed], efforts which largely succeeded. For this reason, in most of the world today, International Workers Day is marked by massive street rallies led by workers, their trade unions, anarchists and various socialist and communist parties.

The First and Second Red Scare periods ended International Workers Day as a mass holiday in the United States, which now celebrates its Labor Day on the first Monday of September, due to its importance in Communist countries.

I have read many books, I also learned many knowledge, also let I learned a lot. Reflection can take many forms. When families and friends come together at Christmas, its often a time for happy memories and reminiscing. Our thoughts are with those we have loved who are no longer with us. We also remember those who through doing their duty cannot be at home for Christmas, such as workers in essential or emergency services.

And especially at this time of year we think of the men and women serving overseas in our armed forces. We are forever grateful to all those who put themselves at risk to keep us safe.

Service and duty are not just the guiding principles of yesteryear; they have an enduring value which spans the generations.

I myself had cause to reflect this year, at Westminster Abbey, on my own pledge of service made in that great church on Coronation Day 60 years earlier.

The anniversary reminded me of the remarkable changes that have occurred since the Coronation, many of them for the better; and of the things that have remained constant, such as the importance of family, friendship and good neighbourliness.

But reflection is not just about looking back. I and many others are looking forward to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.

The baton relay left London in October and is now the other side of the world, on its way across 70 nations and territories before arriving in Scotland next summer. Its journey is a reminder that the Commonwealth can offer us a fresh view of life.

My son Charles summed this up at the recent meeting in Sri Lanka. He spoke of the Commonwealths family ties that are a source of encouragement to many. Like any family there can be differences of opinion. But however strongly theyre expressed they are held within the common bond of friendship and shared experiences.

Here at home my own family is a little larger this Christmas.

As so many of you will know, the arrival of a baby gives everyone the chance to contemplate the future with renewed happiness and hope. For the new parents, life will never be quite the same again.

Be a Woman Be a Human

Little Women is an autobiographical novel published in 1868 and written by American author Louisa May Alcott. She wrote from the heart, and wove into the story incidents from the lives of herself and her three sisters at Concord. It was based on author’s own experiences as a child in Concord, Massachusetts with her three sisters. Little Women is the story of the Marches, a family used to hard toil and suffering. Although Father March is away with the Union armies, the sisters Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth keep in high spirits with their mother, affectionately named Marmee.

The novel hasnt got fantastic plot, but the author described the happy family life with the simple language. However, this is the story of their growing maturity and wisdom and the search for the contents of family life. It has become a much loved classic tale and many of the trials of the sisters are all too relevant today as evidenced by its continued following.

One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways--physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. After certain happy times winning over the Laurences, their friendly rich neighbor, dark times arrive as Marmee finds out about her husbands illness. Worse is to come as Beth contracts scarlet fever in her Samaritan efforts for a sick neighbor and becomes more or lean invalid. The novel

tells of their young womanhood with the additional strains of romance, Beths terminal illness, the pressures of marriage and the outside world.

When I read the book, the comfortable feeling and the sense of growing up both strike me as reasonable. These are some most impressive plots to me.

All of the characters who earlier wish for genius and success—Amy, Jo, and Laurie—now realize that they merely possess talent, not the genius for which they earlier hope. These realizations are the results of growing up and learning to accept small defeats. Even Jo’s writing style changes. She no longer writes tales of adventure and intrigue but, instead, write in simpler style that sounds similar to that Little Women itself. Tough one can argue that this change in writing style reflects a loss of independence for Jo, one can also argue that it demonstrates an ability to adapt her creativity to the world around her.

Another plot appeals to me a lot is the end of the story. In contrast to the stormy, childish encounter between Laurie and Jo, Bhaer’s proposal to Jo is touching and more grown-up. Jo goes out to seek Bhaer, demonstrating that she has some agency in the affair; when he proposes, the rain and mud prevent him from going down on his knee or giving his hand, so they stand literally on an equal footing. Jo, furthermore, looks nothing like a romantic heroine; she is bedraggled with rain and mud, but it makes no difference. This marriage, which begins with equality andprimacy of the heart rather than primacy of appearance, is promising.

There is also some foreshadowing in this book. For instance, when Laurie parents the March sisters with a postbox, the writer hints that love letter will pass through the box in years to come. Laurie promise to kiss Amy before she dies foreshadows their future marriage.

The old story brings me some contemporary thinking. Women’s struggle between familial duty and personal growth; the danger of gender stereotyping; the necessity of work; and the importance to be genuine. No matter what age you are in, you need to keep equality concept in mind. Just as the poem If by Joseph Rudyard Kipling goes:

If you can talk with crows and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings---nor lose the common touch.

Then you’ll be a woman, and be a human. The book teaches me how to be a woman, or rather how to be a human.

how time flies! it is ahnost a month since i arrived here and began a new life as a university student. but all this time, i have been missing you and my dear school. i just can not tell you how grateful i am to you for the help you gave me during my preparation for the university entrance examination. now i will tell you something about my university and life here.

our university lies at the foot of mount zijin, in the eastern suburbs of nanjing city. the campus is very big,with a big sportsground surrounded by lots of modern classroom buildings. what have impressed me most are the big library and the well-equipped language lab. our campus is also very beautiful. there are quite a few well-kept gardens. every road is lined with trees. how happy we are to study in such an enviromnent!

life here is both busy and coloufful. we have classes every morning. in the afternoon, we either work in the laboratory or do assignments in the classroom. in the evening, we can go to talks or do reading in the library. this keeps us occupied most of the week. but on weekends, there are always many entertainments. we may go to the club to have a dance or go to the cinema to see a fihn. sometimes we may also hold a party to practise oral english. in a word, we like our life here very much.

are you still teaching one of the senior classes? i really think that the students in your class are lucky for they will certainly benefit greatly under your instruction. but take care not to overwork yourself. i do hope you will have a chance of visiting me here.

Dear Tom,

Thanks for your letter which finally caught up with me in London. I suppose

youre keen to hear how the trip has been so far. So heres a short description

of whats happened.

Well, you remember we left Sydney on Monday and arrived in London 24 hours

later. After such a long and exhausting flight the first thing we did was to

have a good, long sleep. And after that?a good meal to make up for all that

horrible airline stuff!

The first real day of our holiday was spent just walking around London to

get a feel of the place. After that, however, we were more particular and

planned each day carefully.

First, we looked at all the historical sights, such as the Tower of London,

the Houses of Parliament, the British Museum and the National Gallery. Then we

visited some other famous places, such as Kew Gardens and Hampstead Heath.

Finally, we took a one-day trip to Oxford, which is really the most marvelous

town. You should make sure to go there when you visit England.

After we had seen a lot of London, we flew to Paris. A t first, we didnt

like the place-I suppose because it was so different from London. Later, though,

we began to really love it and started to appreciate its differentness.

The final stage of our trip is a visit to Rome, after which we will be

staying in Singapore for two days before returning to Australia.
