China has been divided into three kingdoms historically: Wei in the north,

Shu in the southwest and Wu in the southeast.

Once Cao Cao from Wei led a 200,000 strong army down to the south to wipe

out the kingdoms of Wu and Shu. Therefore, Wu and Shu united to defend his

attack. Cao ordered his men to link up the boats by iron chains to form a bridge

for the Caos passing from the north bank of Yangtze River to the south bank.

The General Commander of the allied army was Zhou Yu. He analyzed the situation

carefully. Then he got a good idea. He decided to attack the enemy with fire. So

he began to prepare for the neting battle. Suddenly he thought of the direction

of wind. He needed the east wind to blow strongly in order to acnetplish his

scheme. However, the wind did not nete for days. Thus Zhou Yu was worried about

it. At that time, he got a note from Zhuge Liang, the military adviser of the

State of Shu, which reads:

"To fight Cao Cao

Fire will help you win

Everything is ready

Except the east wind"

Quickly he turned to Zhuge Liang for help. Zhuge told him not to worry and

there would be an east wind in a couple of days. Two days later, the east wind

helped Zhou acnetplish his scheme. At last, the allied army won the war.

Later, people use it to say "All is ready except what is crucial".

Among the outstanding figures of Chinese history, famous either for their

intelligence or treachery(背叛,变节), Cao Cao is one of the foremost.

One hot day, he marched out his troops under a burning sun in a mountainous

area. Bewilderingly(令人困惑地) he lost the way. The journey was long and the sun was

scorching. After their fruitless and tiresome march, all voiced their great

dissatisfaction with the leadership of Cao Cao. They bitterly complained of

their great thirst. The antagonism(对抗) of the soldiers was growing fast and they

were on the verge of staging a mutiny(兵变). The subordinate officers were

helpless to cope with the situation.

Cao Cao, however, in the nick of time cleverly and treacherously gave

orders to his troops to march to the nearby plum trees for a rest and announced

that soldiers would be allowed to eat the juicy sour(酸的) fruit as much as they

desired.

At the thought of the sour fruit the soldiers complaint of great thirst as

well as the antagonistic feeling were quickly forgotten.

Based on the story the later generation formed the proverb "to quench ones

thirst by looking up at plums", to illustrate a case where one takes comfort in

believing that they have already attained that which was expected or

desired.

Dear Tom,

Im just writing to let you know that were all well, and I hope you are,

bit of a mess of Johns car. Anyway, heres what happened.

We were on our way to Carols after a long party, and I suppose it must

have been about eleven o’clock. Well, the last few miles back home were really

dark and deserted. I now realize I was probably going a bit too fast for a

country lane because, although the road was fairly straight, I drove up onto the

curb and went into a tree.

Of course, John was absolutely furious and started shouting at me and

cursing. After we d argued for a few moments, we decided to look at the damage,

and he calmed down a bit. Well, we found we could move the car, but the wing was

caught on the wheel, so we couldnt drive it. I tried to pull the wing clear,

but I didnt succeed.

Anyway, John went off to phone for a breakdown lorry, but while he was

away, I had another go at the wing and this time succeeded in pulling it right

off. I threw it onto the back seat, and by that time John got back and we were

ready to go?so we didnt need the breakdown lorry at all. John has more or less

forgiven me now, but he was very angry with me for a few days. I suppose I was a

bit careless.

Well, thats all for now. Next time I write I hope Ill have better news

Dear Tom,

Thanks for your letter which finally caught up with me in London. I suppose

youre keen to hear how the trip has been so far. So heres a short description

of whats happened.

Well, you remember we left Sydney on Monday and arrived in London 24 hours

later. After such a long and exhausting flight the first thing we did was to

have a good, long sleep. And after that?a good meal to make up for all that

horrible airline stuff!

The first real day of our holiday was spent just walking around London to

get a feel of the place. After that, however, we were more particular and

planned each day carefully.

First, we looked at all the historical sights, such as the Tower of London,

the Houses of Parliament, the British Museum and the National Gallery. Then we

visited some other famous places, such as Kew Gardens and Hampstead Heath.

Finally, we took a one-day trip to Oxford, which is really the most marvelous

town. You should make sure to go there when you visit England.

After we had seen a lot of London, we flew to Paris. A t first, we didnt

like the place-I suppose because it was so different from London. Later, though,

we began to really love it and started to appreciate its differentness.

The final stage of our trip is a visit to Rome, after which we will be

staying in Singapore for two days before returning to Australia.

Hope everyone is well. See you soon.
