家乡的老古树长在村口上，长在大路边，长在山脚下，长在寨子旁，远远地望去，像一道天然的屏障。老古树的树干异常粗壮，得四五个人才能合抱得起来，枝叶繁盛，不断地往外延伸。据村里的老人们讲起，这些老古树早在他们祖辈之前就已存在了，谁也说不清楚它们的年历，像一位年迈的老人，默默地守护着这片古老的土地。家乡人都把这些老古树称为神树，在家乡人的心目中，老古树是护村护寨护人的树。

我在山里的时候，每每经过老古树旁，总会对它心怀厚厚的敬意。听婆婆说起过，在几十年前她嫁过来不久后这里便发生了大洪灾。山高坡陡的地方出现了山体滑坡，大片的良田好土都淹没在浑浊的泥沙里。当时便有许多的村民都往老古树上爬寻求避难。洪灾过后，获救的人们都前去烧纸上香，感激老古树大恩大德。似乎人们的生存与老古树有息息的关联。

一直以来，老古树很受家乡人的敬重。老人们说：那年，在解放战争的湘西剿匪战斗中，硝烟弥漫，解放军战士们一连打了几天几夜，没有工事的抵挡，很难跟土匪们正面作战，伤亡惨重。幸亏就是这些老古树，不知挡了多少子弹的古树成为了解放军战士们最好的“工事掩体”。更让老辈们记住的是，在一次战斗中老古树因到土匪们故意放火烧山而引起熊熊大火，最后还是解放军战士们和乡亲们一起合力扑救，老古树才得以幸存。老古树的存亡早已和这片土地上的乡亲们紧密联系在一起了，乡亲们也早已把老古树当作了生命依托，都有一种叶与根一样深深厚厚的感情。提起老古树时，乡亲们都会涌起一股自豪之感。

老古树与乡亲们的情分说起来真的很奇妙。曾有一个外来的大老板想用重金买下这些老古树，结果遭到了乡亲们的强烈反对，乡亲们说，老板的钱再多也买不了这些老古树，乡亲们还拿着锄头镰刀要跟买老古树的老板拼命，一看那阵势，买树的老板只好灰溜溜的离开，这样老古树最终得以保存下来了。
