We couldn t believe that it was a village. The buildings for the farmers were very beautiful, the streets were very clean and there were many flowers in front of the houses. As we all know, fire is one of the most terrible killers in our modern society.We know that fire is mainly caused by smokers, followed by defective insulations and children playing with matches.In 2002 ,thousands of fire happened all over the country, of which 50 percent was caused by smokers who left cigarette-ends everywhere.Those who smoke should make sure that the cigarettes are stubbed out before being thrown away.Also, smoking should not be allowed in public places.30 percent of fire was caused by defective insulation. Workers should know the importance of good insulation for people’s lives.At homes we must pay special attention to electric wires and make sure that they are safe.20 percent of fire are caused by children playing with matches. No matter what type of the reason it was, there was one thing in common:carelessness.So if everyone in the country is careful enough, more fire could be avoided.

SomeHolidays are so much fun that they catch on outside of their culture. The most obvious exampleisprobably Christmas, which is celebrated around the world by people who aren’t even Christian. Similarly, in recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has moved beyond China to become an international holiday celebrated by people who may know little about the holiday’s origins.

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three majorChineseholidays, along with the Spring and Moon Festivals. Of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water.

liu hua is my best friend. she is less tall than i, but of stronger constitution. she looks more like a boy than a girl and is strong willed. at college, we spent a lot of time together reading, talking,singing and laughing. whenever we were together we feel happy and carefree.

we have much in common regarding ow education, background, interests and hobbies. we often help each other andlearn from each other. once,when she was in the hospital for an operation on her appendix, i took care of her in every way possible, which made xiang song (the young teacher who shared the ward with her) envy our friendship. when i was preparing for put graduate exams, she did the cooking and urged others to help me. after graduation we parted. she went to argentine. i was still in ustc. we promised to meet in the united states. so we both worked hard at our lessons.

true friendship lasts a long time. hard work is rewarding and three years later, we me again. true to our word, we met at the place where we promised to see each other the united states of america. i received an asslstantship in ncsu and she earned enough money in argentine to support herself and work her way through college.
