The term "Guo Nian", which may mean "Survive the  Nian" becomes today "Celebrate the (New) Year" as the word "guo" in Chinese  having both the meaning of "pass-over" and "observe". The custom of putting up  red paper and firing fire-crackers to scare away Nian should it have a chance to  run loose is still around. However, people today have long forgotten why they  are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the  excitement of the celebration.

在我们中国，有很多闻名中外、历史悠久的节日。如元宵节、重阳节、中秋节等。其中，我最喜欢的节日是春节。这个节日在农历的正月初一。

去年春节，我和爸爸妈妈回到了东北老家，那里天气十分寒冷，冰天雪地的，可是房间里因为有暖气却是温暖如春。早上我刚起床，几个小伙伴就来找我一起去放鞭炮，我提着满满一袋鞭炮，就出门了。我们跑到宽阔的广场上，我先拿出了一小盒摔炮，说：“我们一起来比赛摔炮吧！谁摔出的声音越响谁就算胜出，好吗？”大家一致同意。接着我们每人都拿起一只摔炮，我突然用力摔下去，噼啪的声音将大家都吓了一跳。小王才是最厉害的呢！他一下子就扔出了一小把摔炮，这声音如排山倒海，周围家养的鸡都以为地震了，一个个扑着翅膀逃走了。这时，小张拿出了一种新型的鞭炮，加做“鱼雷”。据说这种鞭炮有防水的功能，可以在水下行驶。只要运气好，还有可能把鱼给炸上来。小张说：走，我们一起去小河边玩鱼雷！”来到小河边，小张给我们做了个示范，他拿出一个打火机，拆开鞭炮上的导火线，那线很长，比一般的都要大上二三倍。他先把“鱼雷”放进水中，在岸上拉着导火线，点上了火。不一会儿，“鱼雷”飞快地“游”了起来。它一会儿钻入水中，一会儿浮上水面，忽上忽下。这时，有一条小鱼被弹了上来，大家争先恐后地去捉，欢笑声不时从耳边传来……

我们还吃了丰盛的年夜饭，真是高兴极了！

春节是我最喜欢的传统节日！

In China, Spring Festival is the biggest day. People will come back home

and enjoy spending some time with their families. So no matter how far they are,

they will figure out all the ways to come back home and get reunited. The house

cleaning work before the coming of this big day always brings me the happy

memory. We can find something lost a long time ago in the corner. It is like the

surprise and makes me feel so excited. On the New Year’s Eve, all of my families

will sit together and enjoy the real big meal. We share our happiness and the

future expectation. What a nice moment.
