Yuandan is the first day of the lunar calendar. It is the day when the earth has circled the sun for one round and is beginning another circling. It represents a new beginning when people send off the old days and welcome the new ones. As the first day of the year, Yuandan has been considered to be the most important festival since the ancient times.

Customs

1. Kaisui(beginning of the year): According to the Chinese traditional custom, starting from haishi(9p.m. to 11p.m.)of the last evening of the twelfth lunar month, each family must prepare offering s to deities at the altar. At the same time, they too prepare food for the New Year day: The whole family will then stay awake together to attend to the year(called shou sui). After haishi, zishi(11p.m. to 1a.m.)will come, and this is the arrival of New Year(Yuandan). At this moment, people begin the celebration with fireworks. Vegetarian and sweet foods will then be placed are the altar for offerings, and incense be burned to welcome the deities. In the ancient times, it was believed that haishi connected the two years and thus was called kaisui.

At the same night, some families will follow the instruction in Tongshu and place preparing altar in the direction of the "fortune deity" during the "fortune time" to receive the deity. If the direction of the "fortune deity" is at the "ill position", people will choose to receive "happy deity" or "noble deity" instead.

2. There is an apparent difference in the custom of food taking on Yuandan between the Chinese in the northern and southern regions. The northern Chinese has the habit of taking jiao zi(dumpling made of flour with vegetable and meat wrapped inside). Some people may put a sweet or a coin inside jiao zi, hoping to have a sweet year after tasting the sweet and a wealthy year after tasting the coin. on the other hand, the southern Chinese have the taboo for killing on Yuandan. Therefore, they do not take meat in tee morning of Yuandan, so as to avoid bloodshed or mutual slaughter. In order to evade misfortune, they have the first meal of this day without meat. Instead, they take vegetarian food for the sake of virtue.

3. What is special during the New Year is that parents or elders will distribute red packets(ang pao or ya sui qian)to the children. People in the ancient times were more particular in giving away the red packets: the distribution took place on the eve of New Year so that the kids could suppress the past year and enter the New Year. Ya sui has the meaning of overcoming the unpredictable future. Representing the wishes for the healthy psychological growth of the children, ya sui qian symbolises the elders hope to see their children overcome all the unpredictable elements brought by the "year".

熊猫(Pandas)

There are some pandas in the zoo. They look like a bear, but they are not a bear.

They live in China. They have a small tail and fat body. They are black and white. They’re very clumsy, but they can climb trees. They like to eat bamboo very much. Look! The baby panda is under the mother panda, they are sleeping. They look very lovely. Pandas are my favourite animals.

From a middle class family， I was born in Hsin Ying， Tainan on October 10 th， 1965. My father is a civil official at Tainan City Government. My mother is a house wife good at cooking. Although I am the only child of my parents， I am by no mans a spoiled one. On the contrary， I have been expected to be a successful man with advanced education. I study hard at school. Besides texts knowledge， journalism is my favorite; whenever reading， my heart is filled with great joy and interesting.

Being good is must; successful， however， is plus. Father adopts the idea of his father. Especially in military service， I realized it more precisely. People said: Military service makes a boy to man， I agree that.

I realized the importance of English and began to study diligently when I was eighteen. I did not start in my early age， but I hope that I could pass the test of General English Proficiency Test. And this is my best wish at the moment.

I’m glad to have this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jia ying.I come from a small village in Beijing Province, where live my happy families. I love them.

Hi,everybody. Good to be here. Facing the audience, a thought occured to me. Mama has alway told me not to make a fool in public. But somehow I just couldnt follow what she said exactly. Well some people always treat me as a crazy loon. For Im never part of any crowd and have some dreams far-off look. Id even crash into someone with my nose stuck in a book. Now Im standing on the stage, giving a speech in English. Circumstance being that Im pretty nervous. Maybe some guy would just think that itd embarass me as frightened speechless. Never mind. Im always good for a laugh.

I am an English graduate of 2007 in Hunan University of Science and Engineering. Throughout my campus life, I have devoted myself with sincerity and motivation to the learning of English language. As an English major, I have a good command of English in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Being proud of my fluent oral English, I can express myself precisely. 每年农历八月十五日，是传统的中秋佳节。这时是一年秋季的中期，所以被称为中秋。

the festival has a long history. in ancient china, emperors followed the rite of offering sacrifices to the sun in spring and to the moon in autumn. historical books of the zhou dynasty had had the word "mid-autumn". later aristocrats and literary figures helped expand the ceremony to common people. they enjoyed the full, bright moon on that day, worshipped it and expressed their thoughts and feelings under it. by the tang dynasty (618-907), the mid-autumn festival had been fixed, which became even grander in the song dynasty (960-1279). in the ming (1368-1644) and qing (1644-1911) dynasties, it grew to be a major festival of china.

中秋节有悠久的历史，和其它传统节日一样，也是慢慢发展形成的，古代帝王有春天祭日，秋天祭月的礼制，早在《周礼》一书中，已有“中秋”一词的记载。后来贵族和文人学士也仿效起来，在中秋时节，对着天上又亮又圆一轮皓月，观赏祭拜，寄托情怀，这种习俗就这样传到民间，形成一个传统的活动，一直到了唐代，这种祭月的风俗更为人们重视，中秋节才成为固定的节日，《唐书·太宗记》记载有“八月十五中秋节”，这个节日盛行于宋朝，至明清时，已与元旦齐名，成为我国的主要节日之一。

folklore about the origin of the festival go like this: in remote antiquity, there were ten suns rising in the sky, which scorched all crops and drove people into dire poverty. a hero named hou yi was much worried about this, he ascended to the top of the kunlun mountain and, directing his superhuman strength to full extent, drew his extraordinary bow and shot down the nine superfluous suns one after another. he also ordered the last sun to rise and set according to time. for this reason, he was respected and loved by the people and lots of people of ideals and integrity came to him to learn martial arts from him. a person named peng meng lurked in them.
