潮汕地区最早的居民是越族。传说，越族人的脚小趾是“重甲”的（即有两片相叠的趾甲）。到了秦朝以后，来自河南、山西一带的中原人民陆续南迁。他们大多先迁往江浙地区，后经福建辗转迁入潮汕地区。他们带来了先进的生产工具和生产技术，与越族人交流、融合、繁衍生息，使越族人逐渐汉化，形成了潮汕先民。现在，要找到脚小趾“重甲”的人可不是一件容易的事。我的大姑两只脚小趾都“重甲”，我爸爸则是右脚的脚小趾“重甲”。
