The revolution was important and the ideals that this country was founded on, ideals of equality, respect for one another, and a commitment to progress, are ideals to be proud of, even if we don’t always live up to those ideals. I know many liberals hate to hear it, but the majority of the world is worse off than us, from third world countries to dictatorships, the world has got a lot of bad in it. And the much longer, more troubled histories of nations such as England have more mistakes and terrible acts in them than ours do. America has ideals and a commitment to democracy and freedom you can find nowhere else. Our spirit is strong and even if our government doesn’t live up to that spirit all the time, our citizens strive for it. Independence Day isn’t about petty squabbles and historical smear campaigns. This day is about celebrating our achievements and our ideals, acknowledging our mistakes, and reaffirming our commitment to make this country better so that, one day, those principles that the men who drafted our Declaration of Independence put forth, will be fully realized.

Eating No-nos

Dont stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl.Instead,lay them on your dish. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like this shrine and is equivalent to wishing death upon a person at the table!

那是个周末,妈妈精心地准备了一桌子美味可口的晚餐。看着那些诱人的美味,嘴馋的我垂涎欲滴,觉得肚子饿的更加厉害,‘咕咕’叫得更响了,便忍不住用那刚学会拿筷子的小手伸向盘中的美味。妈妈看见了连忙阻止说:“不能用手拿菜吃啊,手上有细菌的,要用筷子。”眼看着吃不到,我急了,说:“我手洗干净了,我早记住饭前要洗手,不信你看。”我将自己那白白嫩嫩的小手伸给妈妈看。妈妈笑着又说:“那也不行啊,洗得再干净还是会有细菌的,更何况你要是在家里养成了这个习惯,到别人家去做客也这样用手拿菜吃,显得多不文雅,多不礼貌啊。”我一听有道理,便耐心地等着妈妈盛饭拿筷子。终于妈妈给饭和筷子端到我面前,我想这下可以吃了吧,便迫不及待地拿筷子去拣菜,没想到这次妈妈又阻止了我,说:“要等爸爸妈妈上桌后一起吃。”又不能吃,我不高兴了,嘟着嘴问:“为什么呀?”妈妈告诉我:“等爸爸妈妈一起吃,这样才是爱爸爸妈妈,尊重爸爸妈妈的表现,而不是只顾着自己先吃,你说对吗?还有在外面就餐一定要等人都到齐后才能吃,这样才礼貌,表示出对别人的尊敬。”虽然我很不情愿,可还是将妈妈的话牢牢记在心里。终于开饭了,我将盘中的菜一股脑儿地拣到碗里,碗里堆得高高的,都快漫出来了,不一会儿便吃饱,高兴地说:“我吃饱了,下去玩了啊。”妈妈伸长脖子一看,我碗里还有饭没吃完,再一次阻止到:“不行,你碗里的饭还没吃完呢,不能下桌子。”我说:“可我吃饱了呀。”妈妈说:“那也得给碗里的饭吃完,浪费是一种不文明的表现。”我又只好乖乖地给碗里剩饭吃完。

从那以后,我不管是在哪儿吃饭,都会遵循妈妈的教导。和好朋友们一起聚餐,我会礼貌地提醒她们,要等爸爸妈妈们一起吃,不要给碗里拣太多的菜,吃多少拣多少,以免吃不完浪费。锄禾日当午,汗滴禾下土。谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦。我们要尊重农民伯伯的劳动成果,不能浪费粮食。叔叔阿姨听了夸我真懂事。和长辈们一起吃饭,我更是请太婆或爷爷奶奶先吃,给好吃的让给他们吃。可每次他们都心疼我,往我碗里使劲拣菜让我先吃,我就告诉他们:“到处都在讲‘礼让三先’,我在家吃饭也应该让爷爷奶奶先吃后我再吃。”听得爷爷奶奶乐得合不拢嘴来,直夸我有礼貌。看来礼仪不光光是彼此尊重,让社会更和谐,同时也能带给自己快乐和荣誉。

The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3,1776.He described "pomp and parade,with shows,games,sports,guns,bells,bonfires,and illuminations" throughout the United States.However,the term "Independence Day" was not used until 1791.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,and to the Republic for which it stands.One nation under God,indivisible,with liberty and justice for all.”

The next dish is the main course.Many Westerners think the chicken breast with its tender white flesh is the best part of the bird. Some people can use their fingers when they eating chicken or other birds,but never touch beef or other meat in bones.It is polite to finish eating everthing on your plate,so dont take more food than you need.

At table ,you should try to speak quietly and smile a lot,but do not laugh all the time.

Most Westerners like soft drink if they will drive home.Many of them drink white or red wine with the food.When drinking to someones health,you raise your glasses,but the glasses should not touch. The custom of toasting in some parts of China is to finish the drink at once,but Westerners usually take only a sip.For drinking during a dinner,the best advic is never to drink too much.

Table manners change over time.They follow the fashion of the day .Beside,table manners are only important at formal dinner parties.If youre not sure what to do ,you can always follow your hosts.Although good manners always make you look good,you do not need to worry about all these rules while having dinner with your friends or family

The term American Dream was first used by James Adams in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states: The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown tired and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to get to the fullest stature of which they are capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

Yet others look toward a new American Dream with less focus on financial gain and more emphasis on living a simple, fulfilling life.
