Throughout the millennia, students of all ages in China have had to endure the miseries of learning by rote. Teachers have stifled creativity in the pursuit of the accumulation of facts, and parents have forced children to spend mind-numbing hours cramming for exams. But for the past year, the government has been experimenting with what could amount to revolutionary changes in Chinas classrooms. The aim is to make education more pleasant, more useful and, above all, to challenge students to think for themselves.

What has prompted the reforms is a belated recognition that Chinas education system is failing to produce enough innovative thinkers. In addition, students are deeply unhappy. A survey conducted by the Education Ministry five years ago found more than 80% of students disliked school. Dropout rates have been rising in rural areas—partly for economic reasons but also because of the stultifying atmosphere of their classrooms. Exam pressures frequently lead to suicides. According to a survey last year among senior secondary-school students and university freshmen in one area, more than 50% had considered killing themselves.

Several other countries in East Asia, including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, are grappling with similar problems. But the implications of Chinas reform efforts are particularly profound. Chinas traditional education methods are ideally suited to a political culture that requires citizens to submit blindly to authority. By encouraging students to question their teachers and regard them as equals (even official literature now talks of fostering a “democratic” atmosphere in classrooms), China could be ushering in a new kind of relationship between the rulers and the ruled.

突然，外公的眉毛紧锁起来，啊，原来他有一个单词背不出,急得汗一个劲地流下来。我走上前去用关切的口吻说：“外公，先歇歇吧！”“不，”外公说，“你先去吧，我写完再来！”就这样，外公翻呀查呀，渐渐地夜深了，我们都入睡了。

半夜里，我醒了，蒙胧中看见灯还亮着，书桌前有个背影，不停地写着什么，汗水已经湿透了背心。我定睛一看，啊，是外公，他怎么还没唾？我看了一眼挂钟，已经深夜12点多了。外公的旁边还放着只脸盆，里面盛着冷水，一条毛巾，啊，这是外公用冷毛巾来降温呢！

外公的学习精神深深感染了我。我暗自下决心，一定要发奋学好英语，绝不辜负外公对我的一片苦心。从这以后，我的课余时间就和ABC交上了“朋友”。在往返学校的路上，在课间休息的时间里，在完成家庭作业之后……我把所学的英语单词，一个又一个背记在心里。这一招，还是外公教我的，他说，学好英语的基础，首先就是熟记单词。一天又一天过去了，我对英语越来越感兴趣了，还时常用英语和外公进行简单的对话，英语成绩自然上了一个新台阶。

现在我不在害怕英语考试了，每次考试之后，老师都会在班上点名表扬我。看着同学们那羡慕的眼神，其实我心里比谁都清楚，我今天的成绩，全都是因为我有一个好外公！

During the summer holidays, the programme "Super Girls" is peoples favourite. People would lock the "Hu Nan" TV as soon as possible on Friday evening. These super girls have different characters and each of them has different charms, so both the young and the old like them very much. They both sing and dance very well. One of them --Li Yuchun is my idol.

The disport said, "Li Yuchun was born for the stage," because she has different charm and a very cool face with a tall figure which absorbed almost everyone. I think in the future, she will be another Jay. She will be even more famous than Jay. As soon as her disc comes out, I will be the first to buy it. I will support you all the time--my super girl--my corn.
