天行健，君子以自强不息。实际上，中华民族历来多灾多难，然而，危难从来没有压垮中华民族，中华民族一次次从艰险困苦中汲取了生命意志和奋斗决心。仅从进入近代以来的时间论，中国经历了抵御外敌入侵、内部争斗之困，还有包括洪涝和地震在内的严重自然灾害，一直是在苦难、艰险和曲折中前行。正如李大钊先生在1923年所写的《艰难的国运与雄健的国民》一文中所说：“中华民族现在所逢的史路，是一段崎岖险阻的道路。”

中国是在近代以来的危难中，完成了对自身的再造和重生。中华民族这种从危难中奋起的战斗精神和坚强心灵，李大钊先生曾有非常好的概括。他说：“我们的扬子江、黄河，可以代表我们的民族精神，扬子江及黄河遇见沙漠、遇见山峡都是浩浩荡荡往前流过去，以成其浊流滚滚、一泻千里的魄势。目前的艰难境界，哪能阻抑我们民族生命的前进。我们应该拿出雄健的精神，高唱着进行的曲调，在这悲壮歌声中，走过这崎岖险阻的道路。”
