Im Alina Li and Im Ben Hedges, and today well be taking you through some of the most important traditions of Chinese new year and historical background. We will look at some of the legends behind Chinese new year and how to celebrate it. Here in the US and Chinese across the world.

The Chinese have specific way to celebrate their new year. If you walk down the street in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, you see a variety of ancient traditions such as red banners, firecrackers and lion dance performances, streets are filled with lively celebration.

However, legend has said that the new year has not always been a time of festivity. An Asian Chinese story told a chilly start to this festive holiday, it begins with an ancient Chinese beast called Nian.

Every New Year Nian would rise from swelling in the sea to ravage Chinese village in livestock and hurting people. The villages soon found out from a wise gray-haired old man that the only way to scare the beast away was to set off firecrackers and light lamps and to hang red banners on each door. As the story goes, this was the beginning of a tradition that would last thousands of years.

So this story leads to the creation of many of other traditions for celebrating Chinese New Year. lets take a look at some of these traditions.

最近，爸爸不知怎么的，爱起抽烟来，而且烟隐还特大，每天不只一包两包，一抽就是三四包，家中的垃圾兜里、抽屉里、电视柜上烟盒随处可见，遍及家中上下。看了《宜宾日报》举办的文明礼仪伴我行征文活动后，为了爸爸的健康，也为了我们能生活在一个清爽的环境中，于是，在征得爸爸的同意下，我们协商制定了一份《家庭文明公约》。

公约的内容是：一、不准乱吐口痰，乱丢垃圾。二、不准乱说脏话。三、不吸烟，不吃零食。如若违反以上这三条公约，违规一次就在我家庭院里墙角篱笆上钉上一颗钉子。

公约施行后，墙角的钉子每天都在上涨，当然是爸爸钉的钉子比我多。我们每天都要小结，每天我都总不免在爸爸面前炫耀一通，可他总说笑到最后的才是胜利者，好象他会稳操胜券一样。渐渐地，我发现爸爸抽烟的次数少了。我也不甘示弱，随时都注意自己的一言一行，忽然间，我发现自己的形象变得高大了许多，浑身上下好象有使不完的劲，心情也显得格外愉快。

经过一段时间的比赛，爸爸共在墙角钉了16颗钉子，我比爸爸少了7颗。可爸爸说这次不算，咱们再来一次。来就来，谁怕谁，于是我们又制定了另一个公约《家庭礼仪公约》，公约规定，谁若做了一件讲礼貌的事，就在篱笆上拔下一颗钉子。

我和爸爸每天从早到晚都显得很积极。一大早，我们一家就起床并且互相问好，再也没有人睡懒觉了。每当家中有客人来，我和爸爸都争先恐后去热心照顾客人，有时还弄得客人都不好意思。

我和爸爸这样积极，不满2周，钉子就没有了。望着我们的成果，我们都笑了。

可是转念一想，我又沉思起来。我们曾经作出的一切不文明的行为，现在虽然改掉了，但对别人做出的那些伤害却不能改变。就象那墙角的篱笆里的钉子一样，虽然拔出来了，但是那痕迹却永远抹不掉。所以当我们做任何事之前，都要先想一想，否则，它会成为我们对别人的愧怍。
