In the Ming Dynasty it was renamed Gulang, meaning drum waves, because the holes in the southwestern reefs hit by the waves make sounds like the drum beating.

It is known as the piano island because people here love the piano. As early as 1913, students in schools run by foreigners started learning the piano. The enthusiasm for music later spread to more ordinary people on the island. Many piano families have since then come into being and produced accomplished musicians. And the number of the pianos possessed is in the leading place in the nation, though there is only a population of 20,000 people.

No tourist can afford to miss one attraction located on the island —— the nations largest piano museum. Divided into two exhibition halls, the museum guides visitors through a vivid history of the instrument with displays and illustrations. All different types of pianos such as miniature pianos, automatic pianos, accordion pianos and round-shaped pianos, are on display.

The architecture in the islet varies greatly in style, Chinese and foreign. Thus the islet has a laudatory title the World Architecture Museum Covered in green all the year round, its charming, elegant, secluded and serene. A great variety of villas stand shrouded by lush wood resembling numerous jadeites embellished upon a piece of verdant silk brocade. At the foot of the rock, theres the Memorial Hall to honor the national Hero Zheng Chenggong.

Today, Gulangyu is listed as one of the nations major scenic spots. The main sites of interest here include the Sunlit Rock, Shuzhuang Park, Gangzihou Bathing Beach and Memorial Hall to Zheng Chenggong, which are visited annually by millions of people from all parts of the country and the world. Lei Feng (雷锋; Léi Fēng) (December 18,1940 - August 15,1962) was a soldier of the Peoples Liberation Army of the PRC. He was characterized by propaganda as a selfless and modest figure after his death and consequently was an idol to many. Today Lei continues to serve as the idol to elementary school students who commemorate and "learn from" him in everyday life,and has become a resilient cultural icon,with many t-shirts printed with his picture on the front.

Born in Wangcheng,Hunan (near the Town of Leifeng,Changsha,Hunan,named in his honour),Lei joined the Communist youth corps when he was very young. Lei died in 1962 at the age of 22,when a telephone pole,struck by an army truck,killed him,when he was directing the truck in backing up. After Leis death,Mao Zedong began what was to be known as the *"Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" (向雷锋同志学习) Campaign,designed to use Lei as a good example to the Chinese people to be cheerfully selfless and noble in thought.

Cultural Importance

The Moon Festival or Mid -autumn Festival is one of the three major traditional festivals celebrated by Chinese people. Like harvest time in other countries, the Mid-autumn Festival actually began as a

thanksgiving celebration, honoring the Soil God and the Crop God. This is also a time for family reunions. Chinese people enjoy moon cakes during this feast just as they eat rice dumplings for the Dragon Boat Festival.
