这个故事主要讲述了：一个住在墨西哥湾中打鱼的老人，他名叫桑提亚哥。这位老人一连84天，连一条鱼也没有捕到。第二天，这位老人独自一个人去了茫茫的大海，逐渐进入了远海。找了一个合适的地方，开始下饵。老人不知道等待了有多久，突然，一条罕见的大马林鱼上钩了。这条大马林鱼和老人僵持了一天一夜。第二天，天快亮的时候，大鱼把老人拖倒在舱板上，老人的左手抽起筋来了，他想：你能坚持多久，我就能坚持多久!

三天后，老人终于把大马林鱼给杀死了。疲乏之极的老人张起帆，拖着大马林鱼的尸体回去了。可在半路上，又遇到了一大群鲨鱼。老人用尽了所有的办法：首先用鱼叉，叉鲨鱼，可是，没过一会儿鱼叉断了，他就用棍子继续打，棍子却被咬去了，又扭下船浆朝鲨鱼抡过去……第二天，渔民们在沙滩上发现了一条身长18英尺的鱼。这时，老人在他的窝棚里，沉沉地睡去……

读了这本书，我被桑提亚哥这个老渔夫的这种坚强的品质深深地打动了。尽管桑提亚哥这位老渔夫在路上遇到了种种困难，但是他都把这种种困难全部克服了!他的心中只有要快点回去，和渔民们分享快乐!

随着故事的深入，这位老渔夫的形象在我的脑海中不断的提升。他一连84天没有捕到一条鱼，但是他仍然乐观开朗、一如既往。在与大马林鱼、鲨鱼的搏斗中，他忍饥挨饿、竭尽全力。桑提亚哥这个人物，体现了人类不向命运低头，永不服输的精神和积极向上的乐观人生态度，赞美了人类生命的伟大。塑造了一种百折不挠、坚强不屈、勇于面对暴力和死亡的硬汉性格，体现了人的勇气与不屈不饶的精神。

当我们遇到困难的时候，应该向桑提亚哥爷爷学习，不应该一下子就放弃，要坚持到底。正如厄纳斯特·海明威所说的：“人可以被消灭，但不能被打败!”
