中国传统节日多种多样，是我中国悠久历史文化的一个重要组成部分。自2008年起，国家法定节假日中，新加了清明、端午、中秋三个传统节日。

主要传统节日

(一)春节

春节是中国最盛大的节日，也称农历新年，节日欢庆时间最长，礼俗最为隆重繁琐，也最为中国人重视。春节从农历二十五开始，至元宵节前结束。举国上下，普天同庆，尤其是大年三十、初一，几乎所有行业的人都要放假与家人团聚，共庆新年。

农历正月十五为元宵节，又称上元节、灯节。传说东方朔帮一宫女回家团聚，向皇帝谎称火神爷要在正月十五放火烧长安，他要求汉帝用汤圆(后称元宵)祭火神爷，百姓家家做汤圆，挂红灯，使长安城灯火通明，并令所有的人上街观灯，以给上天以混乱嘈杂的假象，宫女因此也被放出和家人团聚观灯。

元宵一般是正月十三试灯，正月十八落灯，除灯会外，还有舞龙，舞狮等。舞狮，传说以前有猛兽常下山侵害牲畜、人和庄稼，一位酋长夜梦一人说：“狮子是百兽之王啊!”他醒后，让人假扮狮子埋伏于路边，一有猛兽侵扰，群狮狂舞，吓得猛兽四散奔逃，从此，人们把舞狮作为一个习俗固定下来了。

(三)清明节

冬至后106天是清明节，清明节的前一天是寒食节。寒食节不动烟火，源于晋文公为纪念烧死绵山的介子推而定的节日，以示祭奠。由于这两个节日相差一天，因此，后来两个节日就合并在一起了。清明，古称三月节。清明节最重要的习俗是扫墓和踏青。

(四)端午节

农历五月初五为端午节，又称端阳节、午日节、五月节、艾节、重午等。这一天，家家户户挂钟馗像、艾叶、赛龙舟、吃粽子、饮雄黄酒、佩香囊。

端午源于屈原。相传屈原投江后，人们怕鱼儿吃他的尸体，争相坐龙舟到江心洒下用竹叶包米的粽子，后即成风俗，每年此时世界各地的华人都要赛龙舟以示风俗。

(五)七夕节

又叫乞巧节。乞巧即向织女乞智巧，也能像织女一样织无缝天衣，心灵手巧，一般为妇女摆瓜果于月下，如果有蜘蛛等小虫落上，即织女赐“巧”，一家人皆大欢喜。七夕因为妇女乞巧，又称“女儿节”。

(六)中秋节

中国自古有“春分祭日，秋分祭月”的习惯，中秋节又称仲秋节。即为祭月，于是取八月十五月圆之时，人们静心体味中秋的欢乐。中秋节又称团圆节，又称敬老节。

中秋节最着名的神话就是嫦娥奔月了。嫦娥偷吃灵药，背着后羿上天，定居月亮。从此，后羿思念嫦娥，便摆祭品祭奠。又说上有广寒宫，有桂花树，吴刚伐树，玉兔捣药，而蟾蜍为嫦娥被罚所变。
